He doesn't like southerners he's a northern dog go easy on me I'm new too nas but I presumed that's what I do, do they come with hard drives or do I just connect my external hard drive to it then to the broadband then when I'm on my iPad I can go into the nas and look at pics watch a movie etc etc

You need a readynas duo with 2 X 2TB sata hard discs set them up as a mirror (that is the default setting)

Dead easy to setup probably set you back about £300

Nice pooch!

£300 jeez I don't need 4 tb ,1tb is fine what's the ebuyer deal that was on here a while ago a stora will that not do want I want it to do ?

I have mine in a unused bedroom (all NAS boxes tend to be fairly noisy) I hook it up to my wireless router via a pair of networked 200mbps homeplugs. This works really well.

2X 2TB will only give you 2TB because one of them is a copy of the other (a mirror), if one of them goes down you can recover all your files.

It depends what your after - if extra features like bittorrent/media server/fault tolerance isn't important then any old networked external hard drive will do.

I have just had a thought will it work? Can I connect my external HD to my airport express then go into it via the iPad?

according to this no you can't attach a usb external HD to an airport express via usb, you would need an airport extreme:

I'm sure you'd be wrong there!

Generally, you can buy a NAS enclosure which might come with a drive prefitted or without. and then plug into your router. Your iPad will find the WiFi and your router and connect this way.

NAS boxes can be fairly cheap. You dont need a Stora or higher spec for what it sounds you are doing, but at this price you might just as well !

Here you go.

PS...... I'd prefer if you can bring the dog down in your car (Mine's newish, so dont want any doggie sick in it!)

Use old computer parts around your house to build your own NAS, using freenas.org

..or a router that has a USB port to connect an external drive

..or a pogoplug with an external drive.

You don't need to spend £300 to get a NAS up and running.

Not everyone has the tech knowlege to "cobble together" their own NAS. £300 for a fully featured, warranty and tech supported 2/4TB NAS box with a strong user community is pretty cheap.

Just buy a cheap ebay NAS enclosure for a Sata drive if you don't need any advanced features

guv i would be worried for his welfare as firstly you have your own version of jodrell bank in your garden health and safety, and secondly i would hate him to see you doing a five knuckle shuffle every night and him not being able to ring anybody p thanks for the link i am going to research the apple way first and then the ebuyer route second
