ye i need a pc tower.iv already got a wireless keyboard and touch pad all in one.so i just need the pc tower.i know how to work a pc, but am hopeless when it comes down to specs.what would you class a good pc tower, and what memory amount is classed as alot.

just been doing abit of research and the specs iv seen sound good.

1GB DDR RAM: what is this exactly
Powerful Dual Core Intel Pentium D 805 processor: What is this, any good?
80GB hard drive: what is this,is this a good amount
2.66GHz, 533MHz FSB, 2MB Cache: what is this, havent a clue?? is it good
Multi-Format Dual Layer DVD RW Drive: what is this, any good
128MB ATI X200 Graphics: is this a good one, what do they do
8-In-1 Media Card Reader: what are they used for
    Whats a PCI slot

Its through pc world so will there be any other ways to get it cheaper, i.e. through this site or quidco.

How much would you expect to pay for a pc tower of that specs:
its a pakard bell and is retailing at £260 with a keyboard and mouse, i dont even need a keyboard and mouse so is it worth me going somewhere else.

    thanks guys,

It's about par for the price but will struggle if you want to run Windows Vista which is released at the end of Feb (I think) .

Much depends on your PC use ...gamers would require a far higher spec whereas if you are just using it to browse the web and for wordprocessing then the above will be fine.

However if you want to edit digital photos and other memory intensive tasks then you may struggle...also 80 gb of hard drive is very limited these days if you plan on storing lots of data/photos etc.

I'll have a look if there's anything more suitable within your budget.

    ebuyer.com/UK/…778

within your budget and a good spec...if you plan on gaming then you can upgrade the graphics card when funds allow.

hi thanks for the reply, whats the difference between that one and the one i mentioned.i very rarely play games on it.will that one what you mentioned have vista.i will list a few main use's i will be using it for

itunes:have about 1400 songs at the moment
I have a digital camera: i will be storing all my pics and videos on this
I have alot of videos on it
My xbox 360 will be on it aswell as my ps3:not sure if that makes a difference
alot of internet use will be used

The main thing i dont want is slow loading pages, freezing and being really slow.

    Original Poster

if you can find a computer that does more or less the same thing for cheaper then thats a bonus

MikeT the Dell expert may be able to point you in the right direction if you want a Dell...the ebuyer Acer system is ideal for your needs...1.5% Quidco cashback...rather mean as Dell give 5% ...sometimes more.

I'll have another look tomorrow so hold fire or now.

if its just a base unit your after, why not build it yourself to your own spec?

but end of the day its down to your uses

    Original Poster

how do i build it myself.and would it cost me more.i wouldnt even know what id need.i just know that i want something thats fast and some decent memory

    Original Poster

    thanks everyone, for helping me

depends on the stuff you put in.

you could build your own base unit for £250-300 easy

all you need is a case, power supply, motherboard, processor, memory, hard drive, and an optical drive (dvd rom, writer or whatever)..ive em built round the 250 mark

I have had another look and I cannot find a base unit that comes anywhere near the Acer one at that price..most in that price range have far lower spec.

The Packard Bell will suit your needs but is nowhere near the spec of the Acer..if it's a matter of budget and you'll not get anything better at £260

    Original Poster

thanks curry shops, so you reckon i should go for the acer.whats the difference between the acer and packard.what else is good about the acer

    Original Poster

i think i mite go for the acer, but can you experts clear a few things up for me.remember i dont know anythin about the specs lol

AMD Athlon 3800+ Dual Core AM2:what is it and whats the purpose of it

160GB Hard Drive SATA:what does sata mean, and is 160bg alot

DVD±RW (+R double layer): what does this mean, what can it be used for.what is double layer; is that blue ray

NVIDIA GeForce 6100:is this some sort of graphics card, what are they used for and is it a good one.what do people use these for, games??

Sound card - 7.1 channel surround: what does that do, it sounds good because my sony amp can do 7.1 channel surround; does that mean i could have the sound coming from all seven speakers.is this good

Microsoft Windows XP Media Center Edition: i know what xp is lol,but what does the media center edition offer me, and what do people use it for

i know this sounds daft, would you can get plasma with High definetion these days,do you get computer that can output high def, is this one of them?

i seen this on the comments section: "If you buy this PC - use the 64bit version of XP and you will see the difference" do i get the 64bit, what is it and what does it do.what will it be replacing

iv heard people complain about the:"This would be 5 star, if the intergrated card was better! " what is it

does this come with any guarantee

    whats a PSU

some people say i mite need a graphics card if im going to use my 50ich plasma as a monitor, is this correct.would i need any adjustmensts in order to work with such a big screen

why do some people prefer 350w compared to 250w, does it make it faster or something,or is that just for the people who play games.

my dvd recorder works wonders with dvd ram discs, would the acer do the same

whats the difference between intel and AMD, which is better

iv heard of vista but what does it do, and how is it better

is there any other options to get this cheaper, i.e quidco or any online deals on this site.is ebuyer the cheapest place to get this

wow this is some hardrive, just read aload of the reviews, very highly recommended.

someone just recommended me this, is this better its only £10 dearer

    heres a question

my brother has a pc (hardrive, monitor), and at the moment hes connected to out NTL broadband router, i live in the loft and he lives in the bedroom below which is connected with stairs. How would i get the internet on my new acer, what would i have to buy and would i connect it.I dont want to share a connection, correct me if im wrong but doesnt it split the signal therefore halving the speed.for instance say we had 4 mb,would i get 2mb and my bro get 2mb or is there a way where we can both get 4.what equipment would i need for this.i dont want to go cheap on the internet connections,i would rather pay for a decent one than a bad cheap one.

NOPE ..YOU SIMPLY PURCHASE A USB WIRELESS CONNECTOR and connect to your PC.. THAT WILL PICK UP THE SIGNAL FROM YOUR BROTHER'S WIRELESS ROUTER..I TAKE IT HE HAS WIRELESS AND NOT JUST A CABLE MODEM?...IN MY EXPERIENCE THE BROADBAND SPEED REMAINS MUCH THE SAME

For you to pick up a signal from another PC with a broadband connection it will have to have a wireless router connected...you can buy these for about £40 and your PC will require a USB wireless receiver ...quite often these can be purchased as a bundle for about £50.

As I advised you need to google the ACER model number and it will show you where it is sold so you can compare prices.

Well it certainly gets good reviews from Dabs customers...you can get far cheaper wireless keyboard/mouse sets but I think it's a case of you get what you pay for and the cheaper ones never stand the test of time...yes it will work with the Acer.

Not sure about this as it's a bluetooth adapter and may not work with the Linksys router you have....maybe worth a check on the Linksys website.

You should have no problems with signal strength...I have 3 PCs on a wireless network...2 are upstairs at opposite sides of the house from the downstairs router and the signal is fine.

I have to accept defeat on this one as I have only ever used PC monitors...has the plasma got a VGA or/and a DVI input??....does the TV instruction book give any such information??

In all probability the Acer will only have a VGA graphics output so if you have a VGA input on the TV you'll need a VGA cable...anyway whatever cable you require it's best to buy at the same time from ebuyer as their cable prices are quite reasonable and you avoid any extra postage costs.

hi curry shops,im pretty much set on the acer now thanks to you.iv been researching windows vista, i think i read somewhere thats it available to people who buy pc off ebuyer, all you have to do is pay for the postage.would this be for the vista premium package, because thats the one i want.well id love to have the ultimate package but i cant see them giving it away.do you know anything on this.will they just offer me the starter package,if so is there an option where i can pay more and upgrade it.
also is the acer vista compatible, i think it is, just wanted to make sure.

just did a quick look on the panasonic site and it says it has these

    Applicable PC signals:XGA (SXGA COMPRESSED)
PC INPUT: Mini D Sub15 pin

    is that vga

just had a more detailed look at the manual and i found this:

    Input Resolution

    VGA(640X480 Dots),WVGA(852X480 Dots)
    XGA(1,024X768),WXGA(1366X768 Dots)

i know for sure that my plasma can output 1,366 X 768

so would it best for me to go with a WXGA cable

Yes the vista upgrade for Windows XP MCE is the premium....with Windows XP Home you just get the vista basic upgrade.
Of course you must ensure that this is what ebuyer are offering ..it is certainly the case with other PC retailers.

Yes the Acer is vista capable but to get the best out of vista the experts say you really should have 2gb of memory and a 256 mb graphics card...now these are things that are easily upgradeable as funds allow....if I wanted Vista I think I would be more inclined to await it's launch and buy a PC with it ready installed..at least that ensures the PC will work fine with Vista.

Your Panasonic will connect to the PC with a VGA cable
