for the specs though, with the latest i7 processor it's pretty damn good =]

(and if you really wanted to you could put probably put osx on it)

..I 'recommend' one with a spell checker...........;)

    I like Acers or HP

    macbook all the way mate

macbook all day long, use your uni to get the educational discount also ipod rebate scheme on at the moment with will net you another £130 back (or a free ipod)

why not get the ul30a from carphone warehouse and put the extra £400 odd saving to better use such as food or lodgings?

It would be easier to make a reccomendation based upon a budget and an idea of what you are going to use it for

For £500 you could do a lot worse than this: currys.co.uk/gbu…tml

I'd recommend anyone at uni get a Macbook.

It's just the best choice if you can afford it.

    Why is that?

    Why is that?

Firstly, Macbooks are quiet - I hate people with laptops that have fans constantly blowing especially in lecture halls.

    Secondly, battery life.

There are plenty of options other than a macbook.

If you are a mac user get one, if you are just planning on sticking windows on there why spend double the amount?

what course are you doing? as it may be the case that you wont even use your laptop in lectures.
what do you intend to do with it? Design + Graphics? a few games? just general Word processing and internet?

not knowing what you are exactly needing I would look at Acer, they are great quality.

Doing Accounting, I had an Acer before and would rather stay away from them personally

Does a Mac have its own version of microsoft office? and whats the best version on mac to go for?

Mac books are not the only quiet laptops nor are they the only ones with good battery life, and frankly i would take issue with the both claims. There is no innate reason for a Macbook to be better than any other laptop in that regards, it may be better than some, but there will also be quieter, longer lasting laptops available.

Johnrulez, i think you are heading along the right lines, the most important factor is going to be software really. If you are sure you want to go with windows, and you have no particular fetish for Mac aesthetics, there are plenty of great laptops that can be had cheaper than a Mac.

I have recently purchased a new laptop myself, chief among my concerns were performance, price and aesthetics in that order. I found the bet thing to do was to take a look at all the laptops within my price range, then balance between performance and aesthetics.

I would highly recommend going with one of the intel i3,5,7 processors, they cost a bit more than the older AMD Turions or Intel Core 2Ds but they consume less power and generate less heat.

Finally, i think it is very important to see the hardware in person before you buy. I saw a lot of laptops online that looked really nice, but felt really plasticy and cheap in the flesh. I was actually hugely surprised by how cheap the Sony VAIOs and Macbooks i saw felt, because they are undoubtably very sexy to look at.

Very true, they hold their value very well.

Personally, i wouldn't spend that kind of money on a laptop with those specs, but if money isnt a problem then you could do a lot worse. Its still a very capable machine and im sure you will be very happy with your purchase

if you buy it through your uni the 3 yrs applecare is included in the price of the macbook, you can pay an optional £50 to extend the telephone support to 3 yrs as well..

you pay for any ipod in advance and claim it back through the rebate process..upto £130 dependant on the ipod you buy
