Need a wireless router with good range

    Banned
Hi, I need to know what kit to purchase in order to have up to 4 devices simultaneously accessing my network and the internet wirelessly.
Will need decent range as devices may be across three floors, through brick walls and potentially out in the garden.

Will be used initially with 20mb Virgin Cable, but needs to be useable with 50mb Cable eventually.

    Thanks in advance.

Which ever router you end up getting, there are a lot of things you can do to improve (or indeed degrade) your range and data rate. This is a pretty good summary of improvements you can make:

Another key point is the protocol/technology:

Check for compatibility with your existing kit too.

    Taken from ]here:

A wireless router's antenna technology generally determines its WiFi signal strength and hence its range. Generally speaking, 802.11g wireless routers offer better WiFi range than comparable 802.11b units due to improved antennas.
    802.11n and WiFi Router Range

In general, wireless routers currently offering the best WiFi signal range, however, are 802.11n (sometimes called "wireless N") units. Where standard 802.11b and 802.11g routers contain just one WiFi radio and antenna, wireless N routers contain two or three radios specifically designed to maximize WiFi range. Note that the actual range and performance of any wireless router varies substantially depending on conditions of the environment such as obstructions and radio interference.

Surely the range can only be as good as the laptop transmitting back to it

The router can be more sensitive too though, meaning it can see your laptop from further away.

You're right in that you want both ends of the link to be as good as possible though, to maximise your range.

    I just spoke to them.
They confirmed they give a router with 50mb broadband and it is a wireless N.
Will I need some other device to amplify the coverage? - particularly thinking of in the garden, or up in the loft.

I use BT HomeHub - Never had any problems with its connection, We have a big house and 6 devices, 9 including phones and Ipods.
