    Make & model of car?

Timspons etc (Usual key cutters/cobblers)..........also depends on what type of key and if it has built in security chips etc.

I bought a coded key from Timpsons for £25.00, if you use them make sure you keep the receipt because they often cut the keys wrong and need to be corrected.

i got a key cut from a local shop and brought the transponder off eBay, then just got the garage to program it for me, worked out much cheaper.

Most cars are coded now...Makes walking in a key cutter a no no...

No good , it needs the electronic gubbins and to be programmed to the car.

You should try an independant Nissan garage that has the programming unit, should be cheaper than main dealer

Too late now, but I wouldn't buy a car that only had one key.

Most reputable dealers will not sell a car with one key.

Go back to the supplier and ask them to provide a second key.

    Garbage

Most garages will sell the car with the number of keys they received when it was traded.

Unless of course the customer argues the toss prior to signing

Hope it's a diesel you bought OP - the petrol versions are crippling in fuel

thanks guys for all your help

Buy a used key, virgin transponder & then get it coded

You could try contacting the previous owner on the V5 registration document, simply tell them you are the new owner and that you were only given one key, ask them if they have a spare key. They could have one lying around in a drawer and not handed both over when they traded it in, had it repossessed?

Might also be worth asking what the mileage was when they last had it? Incase it's been clocked.

    Good Luck.

Could be an extremely silly mistake if you are not careful!

    Then use a friend/relatives name/address? Worth a try if saving £180 I feel?

Exactly, but only assuming you do not have an unusual surname and/or are ex-directory etc.

Do you really want your car stolen and the resultant hassle, excess, loss of NCB and a claim against you? Life is made even more difficult due to the fact your car has been stolen with a key...

Low probability, but also a known scam.

If the car was stolen, how could anyone prove that it was taken by using a true key?

The previous keeper is well worth a try, perhaps they gave the dealer two keys?

If you do have only one key then its worth getting the garage to disable the other key when you get your new one programmed.

Because cars can't normally be stolen without a key. Hence in the even of a theft payout, the insurer will ask for the full set of keys.

I presume he meant the missing key should be programmed out, not the one that the owner has.

But, they only got one key when they bought it, the vendor could confirm this, and they'd still have it.

I've seen cars removed without a key before, lifted onto a low loader and driven away, looked quite simple.

Again, makes no odds, it would be foolish to give your address to somebody that might have a spare key to your car.

Did you manage to get a spare key?
