    Need help choosing broadband...Urgent.

    Hi,

I have recently terminated my Virgin Media contract early (without penalty) due to getting a very very poor connection.

Now I am in need of another provider before VM cut me off on 12th March.

What I use my broadband for: XBOX Live, downloading 100+GB/mth, multiple PC's connected simultaneously, Streaming Netflix/Youtube/iPlayer, etc.

I've looked at O2 extensively & I don't think their traffic management is for me. Good latency but lots of throttling.

Just looked @ Sky & they can do Broadband Unlimited + Line Rental for £16/mth + £70 Quidco, however there is a line activation fee of £39...
I also spoke to a lady @ Sky & she said that you cannot get Sky Broadband without Sky Line Rental which sounded a little odd.

I'm also thinking of joining Be Unlimited, but they are very expensive. No doubt a great connection, but expensive.

Anyway, I just need some help deciding who to go for (either companies listed above or any I've missed).

    Any help is appreciated.

    Thanks.

    Look at Tesco and Orange.

plusnet - I'm with them, fibre optic (basically uses BT infinity) impressed thus far - apart from that few hours where plusnet went AWOL oO

Were you with Virgin cable or ADSL service

If its a Virgin cable line you have you will need to consider the cost of putting in a new standard telephone line, assuming you dont have one already

bt was rubbish, that was years ago.
    Orange, rubbish, bad connections.
    talk talk, utter rubbish!
Now with Sky, no problems, so much better and unlimited!

I've never had a problem with Orange. Fast connection speed, reliable and any problems are quickly resolved. And it's unlimited and cheap.

with your usage, a BT phone line will cripple you.

Same for me on Orange. I dont pay as i have a phone contract with them. I think a lot depends on area.

Anything but talktalk. I'm on the verge of a breakdown trying to get away from them...

I'm with be, and have been for years. When I get to the end of my contract I tell them that o2 are cheaper and they give me it for 10 pounds for the next year's contract.

    Can't recommend them enough

Sky have been rubbish for months, loads of problems throughout the North West it seems.

I think they used to be Tiscali - It took us four months to get rid of them (5 years ago). Excuse after excuse, they had input the wrong telephone number, blah blah blah. When I did a review search of them, it was nightmare reading.

If I knew then what I know now, I would not have let them get away with it, you definitely live and learn.

Have just had a look at Plusnet. The 40GB cap is not enough for me.

Gonna have to look into Tesco/Orange a bit more.

Cable 30MB package. Speeds & latency was fine until last month. From then on it's been a downward spiral. Ping Test result below.

Already have BT sockets, so would just need activation. BT have said today it shouldn't be an issue.

I would have agreed with you a month ago, but not now.
When cable internet is good, it's good. When it's bad, it's both bad & almost unfixable (for VM anyway).

Talk Talk took over Tiscali some years ago. Tiscali were OK.

Obviously you have had VM look at this issue, it is not common for a speed issue to be bad like that without them being able to fix it. Did they say there is no issue their end or have they said there is a problem?

Packet loss is too high. Either local cable issue (bad connection) or the modem is faulty.

take a look at be there expensive but excellent

Reps on the phone (India & UK) have said that there is no problem.
Had an engineer visit (fault not occurring at the time) & replacement router.
However the online support admin did say there was unusually high utilization at my exchange but not bad enough to warrant an immediate investigation (or something to that affect).

    That's why I left/am leaving.

Have you isolated it to the router/internet connection? Tried the connection wired and wireless, on different devices?

It's definitely a problem on VM's end & they aren't fixing it any time soon so I have no choice but to leave.
Imagine if some of my money didn't reach them when it's time to pay the monthly bill due to packet loss. I'm sure they wouldn't like that

It is going to be very difficult to get A all of the time, and for what you are after Sky seems to be one of the better options if you do not want to pay through the nose for internet, but it all depends on how far you are from the exchange etc. However, even though Sky gave you a good deal offer, the prices tend to go up so it is worth checking. Another issue is they give you shockingly bad routers which have DHCP issues and signal strength is BAD!! PS, you don't need their line rental for the broadband, however, for the deal you may need to.

Without sounding rude, are you sure it is their end? If you can imagine the amount of calls they get due to computers being full of spyware etc etc, blaming the internet when it is infact the computer. Perhaps we can guide you through checking it because if you could stay with VM it would be better.

Even if you didn't get line rental through Sky you would still have to get it elsewhere (one of the problems with ADSL) Also depending on where you are from the exchange it could cause an issue especially with the high useage you will be having. Have you had ADSL previously and what speeds were you getting then.

I can guarantee 100% that it's nothing to do with my PC.
I have tried on several different machines & reinstalled Windows.

btw: this connection issue is only terrible during peak hours.

    Yeah cheers. Saw that.
Not very keen on Sky. Abroad call centers put me off.
But that deal is very good.
If I can get line rental with the post office or something (contrary to what the cs agent told me), then I could join Sky with 6 months free unltd internet?

Just worried about the latencies & lack of cooling off period with Sky.

the problem with dsl is distance to exchange if you live on top of the exchange like me you get good results if you are not then go cable

    Never, ever ,ever TalkTalk.

If I used words which accurately described how utterly awful they are, the HUKD swear filter would have apoplexy.

6 months of failing each and every month ro set up a direct debit

5 months of insisting that a problem with FTP webspace password was an email problem

Emails from tech support, saying they can't provide technical support

    Ignoring marketing preference settings

Refusing to give any way to properly identify random sales calls as genuilnely being from TalkTalkBEFORE I confirm persomal data.
