You can configure a custom built Vaio on the Sony website to have these specs for £788.99;

Processor: Intel® CoreTM i7-640M, 2.80GHz
Operating system: Genuine Windows® 7 Home Premium
Language and keyboard: English (QWERTY)
Finishes: White
Hard drive: 500 GB Serial ATA (5400 rpm)
Memory: 3 GB 1066MHz DDR3-SDRAM
Optical Drive: DVD disc drive
Graphics: ATI MobilityRadeonHD5470 512MB
Display: 39.4 cm LCD, 1920x1080, webcam

Adding the additional RAM yourself after purchase would leave you around £30.00 over budget, but is cheaper than paying Sony.

What would you be using the laptop for?

The laptop will be used to connect to my TV to watch films being streamed from the internet so 1080p will be needed and also the odd gaming nothing heavy so graphics not a issue.

I'd suggest an I7 is overkill for your needs. Also, if you'll be connecting it to your TV, you won't need the laptop's screen to be 1080p to output 1080p to the TV.

This Dell has decent spec and is under your budget CLICK HERE but doesn't have the 1080p screen or 6GB RAM (it has 4GB)

Or you can configure a Sony Vaio F series with the following spec on the Sony site

Processor: Intel® CoreTM i5-560M, 2.66GHz
Operating system: Genuine Windows® 7 Home Premium
Language and keyboard: English (QWERTY)
Finishes: Black
Hard drive: 320 GB Serial ATA (7200 rpm)
Memory: 6 GB 1066MHz DDR3-SDRAM
Optical Drive: DVD disc drive
Display: 41.6 cm LCD, 1920x1080+ webcam
Graphics: NVIDIA® GeForce® GT 425M 1GB

That one has the 1080p screen and 6GB of RAM, but is £20
.00 over your budget. You'll need to wait a while or phone Sony, however, as they seem to be low on stock of certain components as that configuration is currently unavailable.

Both of those are more than capable for your needs and will also cope with most games to some degree. These are just two examples, I'm sure there are many other models that would suit your needs too.

If you want more advice, or want to get a second opinion on whether the info I've given you is correct, you can do worse than ask any questions in the Dell post I linked to - there are a few guys there who know their stuff.

Good luck.
