all the wires have been left in place since before the reinstall. shouldnt the internet just work!!

You need to install the driver for your ethernet port to function - you should have it on a CD included when you bought the machine, or you'll have to download it from the manufacturers website.

You need to install the ethernet card driver first, before you run the dlink installation cd.
You can see what drivers haven't been installed yet by clicking on start>settings>control panel>system>hardware tab>device manager. All the components that need a driver will have a '?' mark.
    Good luck

    ive looked undercontrol panel, and theres only yellow question marks under other devices next to these;

    multimedia audio controller
    other pci bridge device
    sm bus controller
    usb controller
    video controller vga compatable

what are all these. My imbecile father whos pc it is, doesnt know where the cds are

would there be a cd for the ethernet thing??

    im so confused lol

Look on the brands website, it'll most probably have all the drivers for your model pc on there..

whats the network device? is that the router

looks like all the basic drivers you have on the first install, these should be on the manufacturer's website or recovery discs supplied with the system.

Just click on each device and google whatever it shows. Worse case you could always right click on each device then 'update driver' which more than likely search the internet and get them from Microsoft if they have it

Choose update driver not uninstall as shown.

Go to the motherboard manufacturers website and download all the drivers for whatever board you have.

Ah, another day, another help thread. Presumably this will be another one where you lack the basic courtesy to thank people for their time at the end, too.
