    Need some advice dealing with the hard boss.

    It's a bit long...


    Just layout the situatino until now.....

    I am in Yorkshire, and there is no buses and taxies today in my town.

    Boss was really unhappy there was nobody walk or run to work today, he lives in another village so he could not get in. The nearest person to office is me. I need to walk about just over an hour (1h15m) to office if it's normal day. Another guy is a runner, he used to run home, and it took him about an hour or maybe 1.5 hours. I don't know how long it will take him run to work when there is over 30-40cm snow everywhere, but I know it will took me about nearly 2 hours to walk to ofice.

    We're IT company so we could work at home, we, include my boss, exchanged email this morning saying we were going to work at home. But my boss sent us an email this afternoon and saying we should take today as holiday. And force us to go to work tomorrow, by walking and running, and suggested we should buy waterproof boots and trousers for tomorrow, which he said he will make the effort as well, even the weather forecast saying it will be snowing until thursday morning, so i doubt there will be any different from today, no buses and no taxies.

    So, my question is, is there any health and safety issue I need to worry about? And how to reply my boss email, and basically saying I have a family as well, and I don't want to risk my **** for just getting in to work in this weather condition?

    if your boss is seriously suggesting you walk two hours to work and two hours back in sub zero temperatures he must be mental!

    So he told you to take today as a holiday, after you've already done half a days work from home? What a joker!
    No one can make you walk to work in this weather either. Crazy guy

    I run a business and this weather has been a nightmare for me BUT I get on really well with them all and wouldnt want anyone putting themselves at risk getting to work. BUT unfortunately in my line of business if they dont work, they dont get paid, because I dont get paid by my customers if the work isnt done.

    If it is true tell him if he wants you in to pay for a taxi to get you in, he is being totally unreasonable.
    Are you a good worker? Is he trying to get rid of you and blaming the weather situation?

    Also OP if my staff could work from home - then obviously thats fine so dont know why he isnt letting you and the others do that - thats being unreasonable

    if you cant get out to go to work how does he expect you to "buy waterproof boots and trousers for tomorrow"?

    Ok, why don't you agree to walk to work and stay home nice and quiet. Then when you don't turn up at work he can s**t himself wondering what happened to you?

Probably best not to have a row over it-since you have already stated that the nature of your work makes it perfectly possible to work from home,no employment tribunal would ever consider his behaviour reasonable. Tell him politely,but firmly,that it simply ISNT possible for you to walk to work.

    What do your colleagues intend to do?

    You have no rights unless it is in your contract.

    He is being unreasonable by changing his mind but within his rights. You could contest with your HR department but I doubt you will get anywhere.

    I don't know what the legalities are though, can he force you to take holidays?
    He cannot single you out though or its victimisation. One rule for all.

    Using this logic half the people in Scotland and colder parts of the UK would never be able to get to work for most of the winter.

    I don't know, my colleagues have not replied to him yet, or maybe they replied in person, not in company pool.

I have told them that no matter what I cannot work this day, I have gave them 2 months notice and colleagues tell me to ring in sick, no way, i dont ring in sick when i am (went to work on crutches with a dislocated kneecap) i'm not going to lie, they know the situation and they can deal with it as they see fit. I did however go into work the next day with a list of the 28 days holiday I have remaining to take before the end of March, that went down like a lead balloon and got accused of being spiteful, sometimes what ever you do is never good enough, wow went on a bit of a tangent there sorry but what i'm trying to say is you have to let him know he has to be reasonable.

    i was just talking to my o/h who told me the pub he worked in today had been quiet due to weather. As youngsters my o/h and i didnt notice this type of weather and it would certainly not have kept me from work, o the pub lol.
    Start walking and if you cant get there call him and tell him where you are and that you cant make it?
    maybe he will change his mind in the morning? but at least show willing?

    Maybe........but there are levels of responsibility a company has to it's staff and expecting them to walk in such deep snow in sub zero temperatures for 2+ hours is excessive.

    sometimes its not that persons fault, example today my daughters school was closed and my childcare provisions wern't available so although I could have got in to work i was unable to because of others (_;)

    Ye, I bet my own money on it, Scotland and Ireland must have at least buses and trains, and people working on cleaning the road. Which I can't see in my town.
