Need Your Help with a Xmas Present

Hello there. We are trying to get our Mum a gift for Xmas. A bit of background information. She is rather elderly and loves to tackle crosswords. She has a bookcase overloaded with reference books, but one which she uses constantly is literally falling apart at the seams. We would love to be able to replace it, but numerous hunts and searches have failed.

It's called 'Oxford Paperback Encyclopedia.' It's an inch thick. We can get a 'used' copy, but would prefer to get her a new copy of something similar as the original appears to be out of print.

Searches on google start with ' encyclopedia of Pokemon', times have changed.

Any help or suggestions would be very much appreciated. We've been struggling for a while and thought why not ask on here. Lots of helpful people.

If you can't get the Oxford have you thought of looking at the Penguin to see if it's similar? waterstones.com/boo…213

Thank you Susie, but our Mum is old school. Loves her books.

There seems to be plenty on Ebay. I would consider mailing every seller and ask for the condition. Then maybe get it covered for her and personalised?

I guess we are in the wrong business.

You know the clear stuff on library books? I hope you get sorted. I would definitely stick to the same year print and make as that is what she is used to. Anything else would probably collect dust with the others.

You're spot on Woggle. That's why we would like to get a replacement, otherwise it will no doubt become a dust collector. She is very elderly and one of the few things she enjoys, hence our appeal. Thanks for replying, very much appreciated.

It was a link to Waterstones so you could see if the Penguin concise encyclopedia seemed similar - good luck.

    Awww hope you find one.
This reminds me of JR Hartley looking for Fly Fishing .

Have a look a abebooks.co.uk they have new and used listed, various prices and conditions. I know you'd prefer new but it's worth checking what's available.

I have to head off now, but I just wanted to say a huge Thank You for all the help. It really is appreciated.

Hope you all have a safe and happy Xmas.

There's one on Amazon too delivered for 2.81.

We've had a look and it's used. Of course. Sorry, but we were after a new replacement. Never used ebay, so we just saw the new shiny picture.

So, as to the original request, an option would be great as we can't do the original.

I couldn't find a new one anywhere, could you perhaps buy a used one as a replacement and find something else as an Xmas gift if you don't want to gift a used version ?

A used one would probably be easier to use as the spine on a new one will be very stiff.

All sorted. Many thanks to everyone who took the time and trouble to reply. Very much appreciated. We had a 'nearly new' book delivered today, which is in very good condition. Certainly far better than the dog-eared copy it will replace.

    Thanks again.
