    NetBook or alternative

    Desperately in need of advice...

I've been asked to find a netbook by my cousin for his daughter. All she wants to do is internet, chat with her school mates, a bit of music and possibly the odd video or two.

I've been looking at netbooks and my first reaction is that they are quite expensive in that she needs hardly any processing power, storage or so on, which most models seem to sell with more than she's likely to make use of.

Can anyone suggest an alternative or a cheaper lower spec netbook please?

The only thing I'd say she would want is a screen no less than 9 inches and WiFi.

    Thanks for listening!

Maybe better to ask what's your budget and then we can work around that.

Personally I have a Samsung NC10 which I absolutely love. I run XP home, Zonealarm Pro, Paint Shop Pro 9, Windows Live Messenger, IE8 and Mozilla Firefox on it and it runs great.

Plays videos off the likes of Youtube fine, but of course what differentiates a notebook from a laptop is that it doesn't have a built in CD/DVD drive, so bear this in mind if you're looking to play purchased/hired movies on it.

[FONT=Verdana]Agree, setting the budget is pretty key for suggesting any netbook models out there - once you've got that set I can post in links to recent netbook deals for you (posted on HotUKDeals) to give you an idea on what's on the go.

    Cheers, Scotty Boy!

Budget... That's where a brain comes in handy.

The cheapest Netbook I've seen so far is around £200 so anything below that would be worth a look. As far as I can tell he does't mind parting with £200 but they seem a bit like overkill for what she'll use it for.

    Cheers folks!

[FONT=Verdana]It would depend on what your requirements are - what's your budget, will it be used on the road, do you need extensive runtime for the battery, do you need 3G support, etc, etc.

Why would anyone pay £200 for a netbook. I wouldn't pay anymore than £150 for one, unless it was well spec'd out. This will do fine - buyitdirect.co.uk/Gra…315

You're right, but unfortunately he is insisting on brand new... No refurbs, ex-display, returns or such like. I had a look at Laptops Direct and some say refurb while others say nothing, so I'm a wee bit suspicious of what's what there.

As I've said it's only going to be used for basic gear so why would they need a 160 HDD?!? Sadly that's what seems to be flooding the market at the moment - at least as far as NEW BOXED items. And of course there's the trap of falling into spending another £15 for something far better, seeing another far better model for another tenner, so it goes until you blow £100 more than you intended!!!

Scotty Boy... You are definately going in the right direction, so if you manage to break the 200 barrier you'll be a star and a half!

    Thanks folks!

[FONT=Verdana]No probs - deal wise I'm pretty stuck now until some more new ones come out but I assume that they will based upon the price cuts that I'm seeing for the Windows XP based netbooks (leading up to the Windows 7 based netbooks meant to be coming out soon).

[FONT=Verdana]From what I understand it is a mixed reputation with regards to ordering and customer support but I can't comment as I haven't dealt with them before I'm afraid - you might want to kick off a search via Google UK or another search engine to see what review results you get for them.
