    Netbook / small laptop - £300 max

    Hi there,

I'm after a new laptop / netbook around the £200-300 mark. Portability is the thing as I've just got rid of a 17" laptop as it was too heavy to actually carry easily (with luggage etc.)

I've also got a strong hankering for a Windows 7 one...

Obviously I'm looking for the best bang for my buck. No gaming needed, but coping with a little bit of photoshop work would be good. Other than that, mostly it'd be used for the standard office suite and surfing...

    Thanks for any suggestions

    EM

Thanks, I saw that recommended in another thread, but it's XP isn't it? (or do they do an upgrade to Win7?)

[FONT=Verdana]Unfortunately you would need to purchase the Windows 7 Upgrade for the MSI Wind Netbook - technically you could purchase the Windows 7 Home Edition Upgrade, as it would be covered by the Windows XP Home Edition OS bundled with the netbook.

Also bear in mind that netbook, from Argos, only comes with a three cell battery - not sure how high a requirement is battery runtime for you (are you on the move a lot?).

    Thanks scotty boy.

What kind of time would a 3-cell battery give?

Do the current crop of upgrade licences cover you from XP>7?

[FONT=Verdana]Dependent on usage and the power settings used (I have to stress that bit) your looking at about two to three hours on average.

In theory they are meant to cover you from an upgrade - the bulk of the reports out there stress that but there have been a smaller number of issues reported but they've been addressed via the 'fresh upgrade' install option.

Other items to factor in would be a memory upgrade (you can run Windows 7 with a one gigabyte of RAM but more is always better ;-)) and whether the now entry level 160GB worth of SATA hard disk space is enough for you.

Here's some options for you to consider (netbook purchases only) via another thread that I'm helping on - note that ALL of the netbooks listed are running with three cell batteries but it gives you an idea on some of the options out there for you.
