    New contract but staying with same network and keeping my number?

    Hi,

    A bit of a basic question, but not something I had to consider previously.

    I've got my eyes on a new phone/contract combo that is significantly cheaper to get from phone4u/mobilephonedirect than it is through an 'upgrade' with T-mobile. So, my question is how do I go about doing this while keeping my number (I'm rather attached to it, it's only mobile number I've ever had)? T-mobile's retentions couldn't offer a better deal than already advertised on their website.

    I read that you can't port over the same number on the same network between different contracts? If this is the case, the only thing I can think of is asking for a PAC, going over to a Tesco/02/Asda PAYG sim, and then going back to T-mobile? Will that work?

    Also, how long is the process of getting a PAC going to take? Is there a minimum time I need to stay with the PAYG sim before going back?

    Apologies for the basic questions - any help appreciated.

    To be honest, I'm not sure. Best thing to do is speak to someone in phones4u etc., they should be able to advise on what you can/can't do...

    can phones4u etc not do you an upgrade deal so save having to port away and back?

    you will have to port your number to another provider then port back to tmobile, well think thats how it works, as you cant port/keep ya number when with same provider, well we couldnt and that was with t-mobile

    Well I was with o2 under a contract, I recently ordered a new sim package as it was cheaper than upgrading and just used the PAC code to change the number over. Just get the PAC code from T-Mobile and then you can change it to any SIM.

    Port your number to a payg from another provider, then port it back to the new contract.
    Make sure you check how much time they allow to port a number to a new contract, may only be a couple of weeks then you're stuck with the new number.

    Sounds like a bit of a hassle, but it looks like I'll be able to save £7/month on an 18month contract this way, rather than the 'upgrade' route.

    you will need to get another pac from the pay as you go, rembering whats you have transeferred number to pay as you go, that contract for the contract is over

    panto is referring to a new contract you only have a certain amount of time to change the number, i thought you could only do it at the take out of contract

    i dont know if you have to stay with pay as you go for a specific time, i wouldnt have thought so, but port over, use the credit, however much you top up, then post over to contract, nobody is going to be able to give you specific times

    There was a comment from the Orange rep on MSE a while ago, saying that you could port in to Orange in the morning and request your pac in the afternoon... Nice !!

    This is what you have to do. I wanted to buy a T-Mobile deal from else where and was told to port my number to another providers PAYG sim then port it back to T-Mobile

    Right, final question on this, promise!

    On requesting the PAC number the T-mobile chap recommended that I first get the contract that I want, make sure I'm happy with it, and then transfer it across to avoid a port error. Have no idea what this port error would be, but does what he say makes sense? I suppose it's irrelevant as i'm porting over to a PAYG, but would it make sense for me to order whatever contract and phone I want and just not activate it until I do the two ports from and then back to T-mobile now? I don't see what difference it can make really?

    You need to port from T to payg, which you've already started.

    Once on payg find the new T contract you like and sign up. They'll give you a temp number on the new contract use that and make sure that you like the phone and the number of minutes/texts are right for you.

    Once you're happy get the pac code from the payg and give it to T and they'll move the number back. The temp number you're using will get replaced by your old number.

    I think what the guy from T is saying is, if you get a new contract, move your number and then find the contracts not right for you, your going to to move the number all over again. There are errors that can creep into the process. I've seen acc where one side or the other messes up and calls coming in on one acc and texts on the other ! It can take a while to sort these things out as they need to get the network support teams from both networks involved...

    Thanks Steve - got the PAC immediately from T-mobile yesterday, I'm porting over to Tesco PAYG now, and apparently it'll go through on Monday. I plan to order the phone this evening, so that it is delivered early next week, and I should have the Tesco PAC on Tuesday/Wednesday and then back I go T-mobile with my new PAC. Fingers crossed all will be sorted by next friday .
