New desktop PC

Hi guys,

I'm after a new desktop PC as mine is on its last legs. Is anyone able to recommend one for a good price as I've no idea where to start?

I run Photoshop and do a bit of video editing in Elements occasionally so would like one with enough memory for this including an Ssd drive but also a hard drive, ideally 2TB.

I'm not a gamer so don't need the fastest graphics card. I do a bit of audio editing and am planning on copying over a load of old cassettes for a fan group I'm in - are dedicated audio cards a thing nowadays?

I'd also like plenty of USB ports and WiFi.

Any suggestions gratefully received... I'm from the days when you used to upgrade your own 386 PCs with hideously expensive RAM modules - 2mb a module - and you had to make sure you grounded yourself before touching the RAM in case you damaged it. So the options available today seem a little overwhelming.

I'll let you know how I get on - I had a cheapie USB cassette converter which didn't do a bad job but it's starting to sound distorted now. I might dust off my old cassette deck and try using that - Audacity usually does a good job at cleaning up recordings.

Cassettes seem to be in again for some reason - I've sold a few pre recorded ones on ebay. I gave away a bag of blank tapes with stuff recorded on them on Freecycle recently before discovering that even the used ones sell on eBay if they're the better quality chrome type.
So you fancy doing a nice little self build for your self?

heres my top picks.

CPU
AMD Ryzen 5 1600 3.2GHz 6 Core (Socket AM4) CPU £99

'
Ram
Patriot Viper 4 16GB (2x 8GB) 3200MHz DDR4 RAM for £61ish quid. steel.. ebay: 8035053440 £62

'
Motherboard
get the ASRock B450M Pro4-F AM4 DDR4 mATX Motherboard ebay: 401931773849 £60
use the code again for the discount. (its the next one up on the asrock range and worth it with the code)

CASE
pick your case: cclonline.com/cat…04/
CCL easiest website to search for.

PSU:
Be Quiet! System Power 9 500W 80+ Bronze PSU £52

storage: £35 per 240gb SSD / 1TB HDD £35 / 2TB HDD £55
can be had off CCL, or u can go for an NVME from £47ish ..

500GB M2/SSD around £50-60 atm.

GPU:
GTX710 profile £31 nice little GPU, then £70 for GTX1030 basic production.
1650Super £163 atm (riding high) and then the elite production GPU 1660Super £220
would suggest some refurbs but there all gone, or check the used section on ebay of the above..

or did u want prebuilt?

Ryzen 5, 6core 12 thread, multitask CPU which offers high performance KICK up the rear ass...... the CPU to get for bang for buck performance for production, gamer n all.....
(there ryzen 7... but they are for the elite pro's though who need 8core/16thread or its a must desire)

type ebay numbers into ebay for them.

so thats the kinda system i say and i dont even know ur budget... but u dont need to spend alot is what im getting at.

Thanks @sarden84 that looks like a good spec though I would be nervous to build one myself... Not had my hand inside a pc chassis since the mid 90s 😁👵 so what would be available pre built?
Have a look at place like

Scan computer
CCL computer
Over clockers
AWD it
Ebuyer

We would need to know your budget to help any further. I would be looking at a Ryzen CPU and a mid range gfx like a gtx 1650

Was hoping to spend around the £500 mark but would go higher if needs be. Just been made redundant so will be spending more time at home with my PC.

Also I don't need Windows as I'm assuming I can just transfer the windows 10 license from my current pc to the new one?

Yes I use the RGB profile when editing photos. And I would like a dvd drive. Not bothered what the case looks like as it's under the desk!

+£55/£58 for the 2TB +£10 for the wifi(if it has the cheap wifi, if not get it ur self and stick in, dont overpay) so check i think one u have too..

1030 gpu would do photoshop well but reco is higher, but it will do it, and

usual i would suggest something like 1650S which should be the same price as a RX580 in these builds, however cos of the market its + expensive.............

Nvidia are better productive then AMD cards like for like..... so when there on value well its a clear winner.... however
nothing wrong with AMD either but its just one of them when they are like for like, but price high, dont bother.
go for a RX570 or even rx580 cos its not much more and dont be an office boomer, who knows nothing.... so save cos its not worth the +30.. then it should be.

so either of these + 2tb + wifi

and u will need to add option for the DVD or on the stryker deal change case for it to be auto added.

as u can see now much between cost in parts to cost, they sell ..... so good fair build charges.

ud be looking at around the 15th of may atm for these builds.

if u do want a pc alot quicker:

palicomp.co.uk/pc_…eek
its not the super 1650 but a good 1650 so nvidia again +2tb cost on top.. £550..
and thats bang on part value as u got a higher storage such as an nvme.. this will be a kick over the 1030 tooo..
500 build here was a 500part too. and it comes with DVD,

Thank you @sarden84, currently deciding between the Stryker with 2tb and WiFi, comes to £600 and the Palicomp deal with 3tb HD as only £15 more than 2TB, which comes to £569... Says could be up to 10 days delivery on that so might not be much quicker than the ccl one...

CCL are running a little delayed then "stated". though
as for CS they both good..

and u do get a 2600x with the pali over a 1600af but theres not much init in performance.

but u got the options to decide..... have a good think.

could give pali an email at sales@palicomp.co.uk for a quote beat and copy the link of the CCL see if they beat it, (do edits then send the url link, as the link changes per the edit)

are dedicated audio cards a thing nowadays?

There was a fantastic live stream with long term Creative senior workers a few years back. The employees discussed how consumers and main stream gamers put less emphasis and importance on audio after the Millennium and integrated sound cards. Although the niche market has always existed, audio has become more prominent in the last few years to warrant continual releasing of enthusiast and specialist sound cards. So if you are after a specialist or dedicated sound card there are reviews of internal, and external DAC cards available on the internet, just Google them.

see the information from the above guy, thats another positive about pali.. if the sound card is of interest, u can add them into the builds at the bottom.

I think it is 14nm Ryzen 5 1600, not 12nm Ryzen 5 1600 AF?

All ccl is AF.

Ignore the list.. its defo the AF.

They have split the item cos they got sick of folks asking but the old is the new they dont do the old lol.. I speak to these often..

Alot of stuff in ccl builds are my ideas to them btw including the 1600af.
