Do you get any post beeps?
Try removing the gfx card and hard drive, plug the monitir into the onboard vga, then check your bios is set to boot with the correct graphics option.

well i worked it out. It was a 4 pin connectior i forgot to connect:whistling: Its always the simplest thing eh. Anyway i think ive just busted the psu now:x it smelt like burning and the pc won't turn on so i guess ill have to get a new one. Can any one recommend a decent psu i dont want to spend too much i was looking at the antec basiq 500w. I will need a fairly high power one as im running a few hdds and gfx card:thumbsup:
    cheers

    Is everything seated correctly ?

edit :Looks like you solved it.

yep just need to work out the problem with the psu now...........

I would put at least a 550w psu in with that gfx card etc.

Unplug from the electricity for a couple of mins while you check all the cables, then plug it back in and try it. Hopefully it will work ok but perhaps if it's a faulty psu the supplier will refund or replace it for you.

I don't use ebuyer but here's a couple of alternative psu's to look at:

    ebuyer.com/UK/…922
    ebuyer.com/pro…926
    ebuyer.com/pro…927

    Good luck

Also, if the PSU smelt of burning, make sure the motherboard is mounted correctly...

If you've screwed straight to the case without motherboard mounting screws, you could have shorted the board and killed both the PSU and the Board (and possibly other gear).

well ive tried unplugging everthing and still nothing. Ive also tried an old psu and im not getting anything. Ive used the right screws but i think the mobo has arced on the case....is this bad

edit: is there anyway to test the psu and mobo to make sure there ok?

Don't try to switch on the PC if it smells like the PSU is burning, It could pop and take other components with it!

    Yup...

It's not covered by warranty either, as it isn't a manufacturing fault.

could i send it back to ebuyer and try to say it was faulty? any advice

    I've got a

    Asus MV2
    AMD 4800+ AM2
    2GB DDR2 5300 Kingston Ram
    Geforce 7600GT
    400Watt X-Power PSU
    x2 IDE 600GB total
    x1 DVD drive

working fine here, my first build also...where's your locality?

    Original Poster

ah so youve gone for a cheaper psu. what is the performance like running the hdds and the gfx card?

You could, but if they find that the fault was down to you, they'll either send it straight back or charge you to send it back (depending on their terms, I couldn't advise what they are).

I'd suggest biting the bullet and taking this one on the chin. We all make mistakes and I'm guessing you'll not dive straight in without taking into consideration you may need to read up before doing something you're not 100% certain again.

Prime example, you wouldn't catch me trying to change a spark plug on the car...

well i'll try sending it back ive got nothing to lose. if that fails ill buy another one:x

It wasn't the cheapest that's for sure...

you can get the 500Watt one at the minute for the same price as the 400Watt £29.99.

    Top quality I will add.

    Original Poster

oops sorry i confused it with a cheaper make:whistling: the 500w looks good for that price. is it the same price in store do you think?

yeah, but they're usually out of stock. Best phone up before hand.

sure thing i'll give maplin's a ring. Hopefully when i ring ebuyer tomorrow they will offer an exchange for my nackerd mobo other wise i'll be forkin out an extra £50 for a new one:x serves me right for not reading up before i built the pc eh.

Any ideas of what i could say to them after all it was my fault but a good story might help:whistling:

They'll more than likely test the motherboard, I would be inclined to purchase a new motherboard and test everything on it, before saying yes the motherboard is faulty or they'll charge you for sending it to them.

They'll probably say you didn't discharge yourself of static electricity before proceeding, but I've never heard anyone claim static electricity destroyed their equipment.

I'm honest and would never say it was "Dead on Arrival." :whistling:

Just finished my first PC build after quite a few hicups. Im well pleased with it the graphics card is amazing compared with my old 32mb gfx card and its so fast compared with my old 1.8 processor.:-D :-D :-D

Im tempted to buy this dvd drive now as the reviews look good.

Errrr how did u do that? I've been building pc's for about 14 years and I've never managed to kill a pc like that!?!?!? If you mounted the board with the small riser standoffs and screwed it down in all places the likelihood is its not ur fault! Even static would not cause ur PSU to blow up! In fact modern day PSUs are very hard to blow up as they have overvoltage/short protection!!! And not connecting the secondary 4 pin power supply could not cause the thing to blow up!

well the mobo has been sent back to ebuyer now so if there is no problem with it i should get a refund. I really dont know how i did whatever i did but i did it :giggle:

I managed to do this a couple of times. Once when a screw had fallen inside the case and was lodged under the motherboard and another time it was a paper clip.

Both times the system would not boot up but they did not kill the motherboard and everything worked once I had found the problem.

I blew my harddrive up and the pc shut down, When I stupidly tried to wire in a case fan when the pc was on!, I Learnt my lesson the hard way! (Luckily enough it didn't damage anything apart from the HDD!)
