NEW SHOPPING NEW LIFE....Warning about your HOTMAIL PASSWORD.

Found 24th May 2009
My hotmail account got hacked by some automated "bot" doing the rounds and trying to crack peoples passwords.
Apparently, this has been going on for years.
I had a password with letters AND numbers in it but it still got cracked.

They then sent an e-mail to all my contacts and a load of other random addresses.
See a copy of the e-mail at end of post.
They then DELETED all my contacts.

I did a google search and found out about this and also found a Microsoft site that helped me get my contacts back again. They were very good, they did this in under 24 hours.
I have changed my password now so that it has upper and lower case letters, numbers and special characters like £, @ > etc.
It's a pain in the bum to remember but it has to be done I suppose.
I have also gone into hotmail and under the contacts tab, I have exported my contacts to a word file as a backup.

I would advise you all to do the same.

Now, this is NOT a virus, so your anti virus software won't stop it.
You just need to have a really secure password ( you should have anyway but I didn't 'cos it's easier to remember ).

This is the e-mail that got sent out.
It had the title "NEW SHOPPING NEW LIFE" .....................

I doubt a bot could crack a random number and letter password tbh. Infact … I doubt a bot could crack a random number and letter password tbh. Infact I recon it's close to impossible, it takes long enough just using a dictionary on normal words.

Yep.

Even a basic five letter password featuring just lowercase characters features some twelve-million combinations, and if you start adding things like special characters, numbers, and uppercase letters, you soon find yourself into the billions and trillions of combos. Since Hotmail needs a login, and each login attempt takes about four seconds, it's going to take a maximum of about 18 months to crack even a basic password. Using a dictionary would be quicker, but it'd be thwarted by anyone whose password has two words, unless they start creating combos of words too, in which case 18 months might begin to look like the quick option.

Folks, ignore this email and anything like it. It's just scaremongering. The only way you're going to get your passwords cracked is if someone who knows you tries to break in, or if you're gullible enough to enter your password and username into something other than the Hotmail login page. Hackers just won't bother with other methods. It's so much less time consuming to trick people into giving them their details than to manually break in. Always be on your guard.

passwords,lol

Anyways, it sounds like you got hit with a worm not a virus, just try a full scan for malware with either of these freebie tools:

Embarassingly, this thing caught me too (and, even more embarassingly, I'm not exactly a newbie to computers).

I have no idea how it happened. I didn't download anything dubious or put my details into a phishing page. I agree with the others about cracking, there's no way it would have got my password without taking weeks and weeks or processing.

I'm guessing that it exploited something in Firefox, Thunderbird or the Webmail extension I use (used) to access my Hotmail through Thunderbird. If i did anything, I only clicked on the email to have a look at the spam (I would have known it was spam but had a gander anyway!)

Perhaps it serves me right for being curious and poking around my spam folder! Should probably stop looking at the source code for phishing websites too :-D
