New Speeding Penalties from 24th April 2017

Found 16th Mar 2017
Just had this sent through to me from my transport manager

"From 24 April 2017 motorists caught speeding will face tougher penalties.

The changes will see fines for motorists caught going well above the speed limit start from 150% of their weekly income, rather than the existing level of 100%.

Someone who is sentenced for driving at 101mph or faster in a 70mph zone will now be dealt with in a more severe bracket. Fines are determined in categories:

Band A is 50% of someone's weekly income

Band B is 100% of someone's weekly income

Band C is 150% of someone's weekly income

Drivers will also face points or a disqualification depending on the offence. The guidelines apply to all motorists. Magistrates can still issue higher fines, impose a driving ban or sentence drivers to a prison sentence.

Anyone speeding at 51mph in a 30mph limit faces a fine equivalent to 150% of their weekly income. For anyone earning £25,000 a year, this means handing over a minimum of £720 - and they'll also receive penalty points on their driving licence. This compares to an average speeding fine of £188 in 2015.

While speeding fines are not unlimited, they are high enough to hit even the wealthiest offender in the pocket. Under the new regime, the fine is capped to £2,500 for those caught speeding on the motorway and £1,000 everywhere else.

Magistrates can take mitigating or aggravating factors into account. For example, speeding because of an emergency and receiving a Band C fine, could see the fine reduced to 125% of the driver’s weekly income.

However, the presence of an aggravating factor could see a Band C speeding fine rise to as much as 175%. Aggravating factors include things like being a persistent offender or speeding while towing a trailer or a caravan.

Magistrates can also sentence outside of the guidelines if they feel that the interests of justice would be best served by doing so."

And will this save lives? No.
Result in fewer accidents? No.
Generate more cash for cash strapped local authorities? Yes!

I think us Brits are far too compliant with authority. This is just basically taxing people over what in many cases will be minor, harmless and victimless indiscretions.
Does anyone have any sympathy for those caught doing these sort of excessive speeds? I know I don't.

What about fixed penalty fines? All those in band A would normally carry a fixed penalty wouldn't they? Are they being abolished? I mean, for someone earning £800 a week, I would have said that a £400 fine for doing 33mph in a 30 zone is a tad harsh.
Aah a justice system based upon income rather than the severity of the offence that's what you call injustice?
so people on no income don't have to pay anything

"err yeah officer 150% of 0 is still 0"

"ok have a nice day, try not to kill anyone"

You seemed to miss out a huge class of rich people who drive fast cars and earn "no salary"; one's who don't even pay tax.

Although (inappropriate) speed does kill I do agree with your sentiment.
Is this real? First I'm hearing about it.

Similar to punishments in other countries. I think Finland had a similar structure and I'm sure I read somewhere that the largest fine for a speeding ticket was dished out to the at the time head honcho at Nokia. This was many moons ago so may be a new champ by now.
I'm confused about this. What about housewives/husbands? Do they avoid the fines and just get points added/disqualified?

Another example of the scroungers of the country getting even more benefits.
Simple - just don't get caught
Well the money for the increasing foreign aid bill has to come from somewhere.

Agreed, we need to tax more to help the less fortunate.
So basically another tax on the rich.
About time, people keeping speeding and driving like morons...I saw a lady whizz by my area (30mph) near a school doing 50 on her mobile.....that needs to stop !

Only the ones who break the law.

That's one hell of a fast mobile!
If you speed expect to pay the consequences
Yes speed does kill
If nobody sped and there was zero accidents caused by speeding then maybe, just maybe, the government would consider increasing some speeds (motorway)
Unfortunately there are some who think the law doesn't fit them and they flaunt the laws and sometimes accidents happen so everybody must pay the price

No I'm not talking about 33mph in a 30mph zone
As mentioned it's the 50mph in a 30mph zone near a school

If you have a problem with the new fines then most likely it's because you are heavy footed and push the boundaries - the new fines don't bother me, in fact I wish they were much harsher.

I think it is more as they dress it up in the name of safety when really they couldn't care less if Joe Bloggs got anhialted by a lorry on the way home from work but they do care about taking as much money from you as possible.

As some said earlier, it won't save lives so what's the point?

Get on your bike, write down her number plate and report her with video footages, pointless posting here as this wouldn't do anything.

if nobody sped the government would probably lower limits to try and get more tickets, theyve gotta pay the bills somehow...

Pleased to hear it. Too many European idiots in their BMWs driving at 50 on 20mph residential roads.I am tired of hearing excessive revving and wheel screeching everyday.

I agree - fine the Europeans, and let the Brits off, they got their country back after all.
I don't agree with the cap.

Many a time I've seen top of the range sports cars being driven outrageously fast - too fast to see who's driving that's for sure, guessing the only peeps who could afford such things are the likes of our highly paid footballers, pop stars, etc.

Should be no cap for them - if they can afford cars like that they can afford to pay 150% fine - one or two of them alone would probably cover the cost of repairing every pot hole in our entire village - and possibly a new slip road too.
