New supplier wants to change electricity meter box

Hi just changed to eon electricity service recently, and they have sent us a letter that our electricity meter is about to reach the end of it's operational life. Just wanted to know why didn't our previous energy supplier EDF never mentioned that this needs to be done? And is it necessary to be changed?
Personally were happy how it is as we have never had no issues.
Also the letter wasn't sent out with our personal details and appears to be an automatic letter sent to households.

Every house in the UK needs to have a smart meter by 2020. Eon started to make the changes early. We've had no problems with ours and it automatically sends meter readings and shows instant usage among other things.

Thank you for the quick answer scuba, easy straight to the point )

Why are they such a bad thing. I'm down for fitting in jan. Thought it would save me having to answer the door to the meter reader or going outside to take a reading myself. So what are the bad things with these meters.

when we changed supplier they changed our box, they didn't charge us but they did change it to a new meter (this was in November last year) they then came out and changed it again to a smart meter in april this year. no idea why but its certainly what they usually do

Apparently wireless signals can cause impotence. You have been warned!!!

    HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA who writes this crap??

a big argument against smart meters is cost.
    £11 billion, £ 400 each.
The cost won't be borne by the electricity companies, it's far more likely we will pay it.
If the only benefit of smart meters is to tell me what electricity I'm using I can buy an energy monitor for much less.

Just more " Big Brother " ....go ahead if you are happy to give total control to your energy suppliers, I will not.
