I’m going to New York in august and am looking at doing the main touristy things.

Are the tourist passes worth it or do you think pay individually for the attractions?

The tourist passes can be worthwhile, you just have to do the maths of booking direct for the attractions that you are definitely going to see, versus the cost of the pass.
Since you are going in August, my only tip would be to spend more and buy the expensive tickets that allow you to queue jump. The queues in hideous heat for attractions like the Statue of Lliberty are not for the faint hearted.
Tourist passes are worth it.
Firstly, buying them means you don’t pay the higher ‘street’ price where they also request a tip..
Also, if you plan to use a pass for a number of attractions then you save more so it’s a win win
Statue of Liberty is only about $18 each so book and pay well in advance if you want to do that via the official site.

Then buy a 4 attraction NYC pass from Costco online £71 for other attractions. (Add 5% if not a Costco member) we did that and it saved a lot.

Plus, if you fancy going up to the top of the crown you'll need to book this well in advance - it's only an extra $3 (well it was in 2016) but there are only 500 available each day - and you can't book it in advance with the passes.
