Daughter's graduation this Friday. Have decided to make a weekend of it and stay 2 nights. Would also like to visit Durham for the day. Have been to the Sage Centre and the art gallery. Any other must see things to do in the area?

Would be interested in really nice place for lunch on Friday (not a chain)

Would imagine Durham v. busy Saturdays, do they have a park and ride scheme?

Many thanks

Go to Beamish open air museum really good day out. right next to Durham Seaham Hall on the north east coast 10 mile from Newcastle top class resaurant Michelan star. Durham Cathedral amazing you have to go there

Try blackfiars for lunch, its the oldest dining room in the UK. Its tucked away behind the gate/tiger tiger.

Durham cathedral and castle is a must see IMO. the cathedral is free but you need to pay to egt in the castle, not sure how much though.

There are 3 park and ride car parks on the outskirts so depending how you travel there you should pass one. One of the car parks is on the A167 which comes from the A1 so is a direct route from Newcastle. Only costs £1.70/person on the bus. What I normally do though is to drive into Durham drop everyone off there and then I park the car, so it only costs £1.70 to park the car all day.

Bargain I say

I would also recommend Beamish museum. Not sure how much it is now but is about £15 each for all day. You can spend a good full day there so you can get your monies worth.

I dont think Durham is very busy TBH but then I am used to walking around Newcastle and it normally is there.

Durham has a good park and ride system; on the other hand you can park near the university library very cheaply (20p/half hour, along Quarryheads Lane for example) and you can always get a space- it's about a 10min walk down into the centre of town from there. However, if you are staying in NCL I would recommend you get the train; it takes 10 minutes, costs about £5 return and is very easy.

If you like tapas, for lunch I would recommend a place called El Coto. There is one in Durham and one in Ncl (run by the same people). The food is EXCELLENT, and it's by Newcastle uni, but I would recommend booking. In Ncl there is also an excellent one called El Torero which is supposed to be even better and is near to the Quayside. There is also a very good place in Ncl called Santana's (again probably good to book), you probably need to drive there unless you don't mind a 15min walk from the nearest Metro. It's an Italian, it's really homely and the food and wine are great and also reasonably priced. I recommend the fillet steak but the seafood is also very good.

Potterbell is right about Durham Cathedral, it's really worth going to. If you don't mind a 30min or so drive you can go to Hadrian's Wall, which is also good if the weather's nice. Tynemouth on the coast is really nice too for a stroll along the beach. If the weather's good when you're in Durham you can also hire a rowing boat which is good fun.

You've all made this sound so good I might go there too for a weekend!

Wouldn't disagree but you can't stay in there all weekend though;-)

If you are driving ... head over to the Kingston Park area and hunt down a pub/restaurant called Twin Farms. I promise you, you will not be disappointed. Lovely spot for lunch.

Agree with a previous poster than Santanas is nice (on Jesmond Road @ The Cradlewell).

Thanks. Went there many years ago. Not keen on big shopping centres. Most tend to be the same shops that you get in all shopping centres, same as back home. On a weekend break, I prefer more local stuff.
