Things can and do happen in any area. The area where that girl was murdered at christmas was said to be a good area. I rest my case.
Depends on your definition of nice ?
For a family I'd stay central, Redland, Cotham, St Andrews, Southville are pricey but head east and St George, Fishponds are lovely and safe. I live in St George, 3 bed semi with large garden, off street parking for 3 cars and garage........was a self build so quite quirky, near huge parks etc

Fishponds is lovely if you're happy enough to put up with prostitutes … Fishponds is lovely if you're happy enough to put up with prostitutes roaming the streets late at night plus crack heads attacking people in the local park.St. George is not that great either.Neither are as bad as Easton, Hartcliffe or Knowle West but I wouldn't fancy living there. My advice would be to move to an area that isn't as close to the city centre. Try the outskirts such as Yate, Chipping Sodbury, Colpat Heath, Winterbourne, Frampton Cotterel, Emersons Green, Longwell Green, Bradley Stoke (at a push). Being an extra 10-20 minutes away from the **** holes make a much nicer living experience.
All horrible areas filled with country bumpkins with no culture...(think I'll generalise too lol)
Some are ok areas but in S Glos catchment so taxis or transport into the vibrant centre are extortionate. Longwell Green not too bad but prefer Hanham.

Country Bumkins? I'm a 10-15 minute drive away from Longwell Green so … Country Bumkins? I'm a 10-15 minute drive away from Longwell Green so hardly that different.Culture? I'm guessing as we tend not to ram raid the local Tesco like they do in Stoke's Croft then we must lack culture. I mean Stoke's Croft is the cultural capital of Bristol right? Yeh **** right. It's full of doped up hippies and squatters. Have you ever been through Fishponds on a night? My Uni campus is there and before my driving days waiting for the bus often meant being approached by smack heads walking their pit bulls starting on anyone and everyone. The areas I suggested aren't great but ten times better than the ones you suggested. I believe the OP asked for nice areas to live in Bristol not stupidly cheap ones at the increased cost of being a knife victim every time you walk down the road.
Well as a homeowner we'll have to agree to differ. Having lived in St George for 7 years I have never felt unsafe and have great neightbours. I don't recall mentioning Stoke Croft and who has called it the culture capital of Bristol?
Have friends living in Fishponds near Vassal Park and they haven't mentioned the prossies or crack heads. Fishponds is a huge area.

You're correct there. The area down Vassal's Park is lovely - I thought that area was borderline Frenchay (which isn't too bad).
Henleaze. but I hope your budget is big.

OP should have a look around Bristol. You can generally tell which are the nice areas by the types of people you'll see around the streets.
The more 'ethnically diverse', the cheaper.

Epic thread X)
Areas to avoid aren't simply inner city areas such as Easton, St … Areas to avoid aren't simply inner city areas such as Easton, St Werburghs & St Pauls. On the contrary. Southmead, Hartcliffe & Knowle West may not be ideal areas where one might want to live, this is due to the burglaries & run down appearances of some of the areas but it can't be said that these areas pose a danger to the general public as some have claimed on here!! These are simply areas where a lot of the poor & disadvantaged are placed by the local housing authority, Bristol City Council! Easton has become a 'no go' over the years if you are not of Somali ethnicity. It houses a diverse community of many cultures however, Somali residents appear to dominate & as such this has become a 'no go' zone after dark. Be vigilant during the day also but the risks are very low during the day. St Pauls is a quiet area and victim of bad press due to riots & drug dealing during the 80's. This has decreased over the last 10 yrs & no longer a problematic area. Infact areas such as Clifton which are deemed to be where the more 'affluent' people reside, is extremely dangerous at night & many rapes have occurred here! Bristol is NO MORE dangerous than anywhere else in the world.Read more: http://www.virtualtourist.com/travel/Europe/United_Kingdom/England/Avon/Bristol-316317/Warnings_or_Dangers-Bristol-TG-C-1.html#ixzz1OIiwqpeT

It's probably as close to Bristol as some of the places mentioned above. They practically merge into each other. If I was relocating to Bristol for work then I'd look at Bath to live.

Then I retract my earlier (bolded) statement.
take a look at upmystreet.com/ for prices and stats on an area.
your description is a bit open to subjective opinion, but if you dont want to live near/around students, avoid clifton, redland, cotham.
stoke bishop, sneyd park, westbury on trym are very residential, quite 'posh', and generally quiet. typically the prices there are just below clifton which is basically the most expensive in bristol...
Hnebury and Brentry are very nice areas to live, I have been living in Henbury for 10 years. Peaceful, 5 minute drive to Cribbs Causeway and Westbury Village and 10 minutes to Clifton Village. Close proximity to new build southmead Hospital. Beautiful green areas and parks on walking distance such as Blaise castle park and Canford park. surrounded by 2 outstanding primary schools, nice secondary schools and close to some real good private schools such as Badminton school and Redland school. What else can you ask for !!! Whoever say its not good area to live obviously does not know how much potential Henbury and Brentry has!!
