Nintendo DS - Best Games??

I've just bought a Nintendo DS Lite and am wondering what games are decent? I have Brain Training (and Cooking Mama although that is still sealed as not sure if it's my kinda game, so may be selling it).

When I had a PSP, I really enjoyed Outrun 2003, TOCA and Football games (not Managememt style ones).

Does anyone have any good recommendations for any good games?

Mario kart DS is one of the best games ever - also you can play online, wireless and have some great fun.

My other half has fifa street, pro evo 08 and fifa 08 which might be your kind of thing. I love the simpsons, mario and sonic at the olymics and the sims 2 castaway

Thanks - could you ask your OH what is the best footie game out of the 3 above? I prefer the actual playnimg of the footbal rather then the "management"!

I'll also have a search on the trade boards for any for sale as well.

I like the Phoenix Wright games, although they are something of an aquired taste. Zelda Phantom Hourglass is fantastic as is New Super Mario Bros. The Castlevania games are also very good, if a little short. If you like racing games then the only real option is Mario Kart, the rest aren't very good.

Mario Kart DS*
New Super Mario Bros
Advance Wars: Dual Strike*
Advance Wars: Days of Ruin (Dark Conflict in the Europe)
Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow
Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin*
Puzzle Quest: Challenge of the Warlords*
Meteos
Zelda: Phantom Hourglass*

I'd strongly recommend getting an R4DS or M3. It's naughty, but whatever. The ones with asterisks are games that I'd strongly recommend, although all the games I've listed are excellent. The Advance Wars, Castlevania and Zelda games all have a lot of play time in them.

Sure. Basically, there are various sites where you can download the roms (ie the files) for DS games. The R4 and M3 have a microSD card slot built into them. If you copy some roms on to a microSD card, the R4 and M3 will allow you to play the games as if it were the proper cartridge. When you switch on your DS it brings up a simple interface which allows you to choose the game you want to play. You can also play movies (albeit some random file type) and music.

The typical size of a DS game is about 50MB (if that), so if you get a 2GB microSD card (which are v cheap now), you can store upwards of 40 games at any one time.

There are a couple of drawbacks to using the M3 or R4:

It's illegal.
Decreased battery life (but not by a massive amount).
Occassionally you'll get a rom that won't load, or some games can have graphical glitches if you use a rubbish SD card. I've only come across one rom that won't load (out of quite a lot) Although I don't think this can be counted as a 'drawback' anyway.
Download play (ie mutiplayer with only 1 cart) doesn't always work, but local wifi and online play both do.

Anyway, I have an M3, and it cost me about £25. From what I gather, the M3 and the R4 are pretty much the same thing, I'm not entirely sure of the differences.

Very helpful! Rep left!

I should clarify that it cost me £25 without the SD card - I got a bit confused! Although I've just noticed someone has one for sale with a 2GB memory card - worth a look!

Fifa Street & Pro Evo 2008 are both very poor on the DS.
Fifa 2008 is decent as is Real Football 2008.

I bought a Wii recently without really knowing what games were any good - so I went on IGN and bought the top 5 rated games and I was not dissapointed, perhaps you should do the same with the DS?

So what are the top 5 games for DS on IGN? I can't access IGN from work! Did you check Gamespot as well?

Hmmm, I'm not sure my advice will work because IGN do not appear to have a very large review database for the DS.

Here are Gamespots top games

9.0
Editor's Choice Professor Layton and the Curious Village

9.0
Editor's Choice The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass

8.5
Final Fantasy XII: Revenant Wings

8.5
The Blade of Fate

8.0
Advance Wars: Days of Ruin

Looking through IGN's top games, I was reminded of a couple of others that are worth picking up -

Metroid Prime: Hunters
Picross DS

If you haven't heard of Picross, it's a puzzle game, something like a cross between sudoku and minesweeper. It's very addictive! Worth checking out in my opinion.

Picross DS was good until you get to the bigger puzzles and you have to keep zooming in and out. BTW what's the best Sudoku game on the DS apart from the one included in Brain Training?

I just ditched the touchscreen controls in favour of the D-pad once I got to the bigger puzzles. The zooming in and out was a pain.

I LOVE Picross! It's one of the only DS games I still own - and there's loads replayability.

You know, WHSmith sell the picross puzzle books... I think they're called Mosaic though. They're only about £1.50 or something, so people could try those out first, to see if they like the basic premise beofre buying the game...

Seen those Picross books before, some even had colour. Still prefer Sudoku though.

Those colour ones are great (unless you go wrong!)

Back on topic though... Yoshi's Island is pretty cool too!

Not sure why Mario Kart is not in the top five, it's a must by IMO
