    Nintendo DS Lite - problems

    Banned
Having bought 3 of these little blighters - which have all suffered with the same problem - just wondered if others have found the same!

The hindges that attach the two screens crack at first, then evenually come away altogether on one side.

First one was bought last xmas, that suffered a crack within a couple of weeks. Today it finally came apart from the right hand hindge, after it fell onto the floor from the arm of a chair. Carelessness perhaps.

The second one we bought last March, accidently got misplaced after 2 weeks, also suffered the first minor fracture. It was down the side of a bed and found later, but a replacement was bought.

The replacement had the same problem and completely came away within 3 weeks. Thats now (finally) been sent back to Nintendo, as they said it was covered within the warrenty.

Now, as you will probably say, its all been down to mishandleing and little care of the item. Ive not witnessed this firsthand, but as they are owned by 7 and 9 year olds, its quite likely to be the case (and as the intended audience for it) but would expect such weaknesses to be a lot stronger than they are.

I cant blame the kids on the one that broke today, it was me that knocked it off the chair (though it could be argued it should have been put away and not left for this accident to happen.)

Having looked around, it would seem to be a common problem.

Anyone here had the same? Know of any good way to stop it happening (apart from locking them away so the kids cant play with them!)

    Ta

    Cheers for that.

I have already sent one of them back to them (a week ago). They didnt even ask for the receipt (it is in warrenty - but didnt send in case it got lost) So hopefully they will deal with it. Its fortunate we have got 3 for 2 kids - it means weve just sent the one completely apart - and had the other 2 with the crack but still complete. That changed as of today - so just asking if this problem really is a bad flaw - or if I have particularly clumsy kids (and Dad - since Ive just made one go kaput!)

    PS - got a hangover?

Imm guessing you have the white ones as the blacks have diferent hinges so dont break as easily

taken from the US nintendo website (hard to find)

"If your Nintendo DS or Nintendo DS Lite is experiencing issues with the plastic housing (such as a cracked hinge), please call our Consumer Service Department at 1-800-255-3700 so that we may provide you with repair options"

Two of them are white. The one I knackered today (though it was cracked) is a black one.

From what I read from Sassie's link, they repair White ones (ie swap the case) but black ones, send out a new one!

Hopefully they dont take too long with their turnaround!

You can buy clear cases for them from ]dealxtreme.com which stay on and don't hinder playing. Would give a little added toughness.

Yeh, I have seen the ones they sell (inc it seems genuine cases) and had thought about that. But as they are going to repair them FOC, I'll get that done.

Or are you talking about the silicon covers? They would certainly make them more "drop" friendly. Might even bouce back into their hands! :giggle:

As it happens, Ive got a few things to buy from them anyway, so probably will tag them on.

Hmm. Bit difficult to play any games with eh!

They have cases. It only gets potentially damaged when they are playing with it.

I had a DS now for nearly two years (blue case) and not had this problem, to be honest I would have to agree that part of the problem is the mishadleing of the DS machines. I disgree with your view of intended audience I'm 31 years old myself and know a few people that own a DS machine around my age. thinking about it now the adverts I seen on TV you dont see kids playing really do you? I do agree with your point that with it being a kids toy (sort of) the casing would be bit stronger something like a original gameboy but then that thing was big and bulkly wasnt something you could slip away in your pocket like the new DS lites.

I heared of a repair company that has had in countless PSP machines where the screen has been damaged from poor misuse simply cause parents buy them for young kids, not realising this machines are not young kids toys more teenage toys. They cant stand up to the abuse given out to someone whos only 9 etc

OK, its for little kids and big kids!:giggle:

It is a common problem though - and the fact they are repairing it free, suggest they are acknowledging this and to be fair, it is very good customer relations.

I know if it were mine, I defo would take good care of it.... but accidents do happen (as the guy in the other thread for his broken LCD through a Wii accident will tell ya!) I certainly wont have a Wii in my house - even though the kids grandparents want to by mine one for Xmas. I value my Plasma (and thier lives if they did the inevitable) too much!
