No Country for Old Men -can someone help me out please?

Ok, so i feel like i wasted 2 hours of my life last night that i will never get back.

I watched it, carefully and considered and got the end feeling, what was that all about?
Please can someone help me diagnose this film, it seemed, well, pointless. Ending was left-field, and the characters were poorly introduced, just seems a real weird film
Now, i am guessing there will be fans of this, and would be nice to know what they liked, why and perhaps explain to me.

I am currently digesting what the imdb forum has to say about it.......seems mixed to say the least, mind that forum is well messed up at times

I'm watching it next week - until then I'm staying off this thread!

you need to take the film with in the context of the cohe bros other films, if you watch fargo and a few others you will begin to see how they think.

The film will become clearer

This isnt a film where you can just sit there and let it lap over you, you need to critically engage with the film.

Sorry Liddle, apologies for that
Come back next week then please, and in the words of Craaaaaaig David, fill me in

Well having watched the 1st hour or so of Yaaa, sorry Fargo and thinking that was awful (too) perhaps that explains it all

if your basis of cinema is mission impossible die hard and terminator you're not going to get this film.

Fargo is in my top ten! I will provide a full review of No Country... later. For me, it's a little like waiting for GTAIV was for others :-D

EDIT: and, not surprisingly, I love everything the Cohen brother have done... as said above, once you appreciate their mind-set, you'll find them hilarious!

Cant help you look deeper have wasted too much time doing that with fans.... It passed me by completely no one i have spoken 2 had a very good explanation either, but then again I thought if There will be blood did not have daniel in it it would have been truely missable. See a movie called Into the wild or Michael Clayton good stuff.

The film is deliberately slow paced, once I realised this I enjoyed it a lot more.

That's a bit harsh. Not saying i am Mark Kermode by any means, but that is a bit harsh.

If i had to list some of my fave movies, i'd go for, in no order
Leon (unedited International), Blade, Face Off, American History X, Fear, One Hour Photo, The Rock, Gangster No 1, Heat, Goodfellas, 3 x Bourne, The Proposition, Payback..... just off the top of my head.
I didn't come on here to trade insults, just some comments.......

If i was supposed to be laughing at No country then that explains it, don't think i even broke a smile but fargo i loved and laughed alot.

Usually I love the Coen Brothers stuff, but I remember watching Barton Fink and hating it, so maybe even if you love the Coen Brothers, there has to be one film you hate!

I don't think he was insulting or harsh, it was just a comment. Some people like action movies, otehrs comedies, some people like films that require a more philosophical / intellectual mind.

I've not seen this movie or anything by them so I don't know where it sits.

sorry that was in no way meant as a direct insult to you, i just meant in general if someone only goes to the cinema expecting mission impossible they simply will not enjoy this film.

ps i love kermode

Apology accepted and returned
I didn't *really* know what to expect to be honest. I knew it was a major film, won at least one Oscar from memory so figured it'd be worth a watch. As for the Coen Bros, i wished i had read that it was their film lol, that would have persuaded me not to watch it.
Seems a bit like Marmite this film and those two eh?

Kermode is good, but he is better when he has his tiffs with Mr. Mayo, the way those 2 go on is so funny

I couldn't agree more with the OP on this one! It appears to be the case that there are now a number of movies that come out that have no point whatsoever which end up getting 'critically acclaimed' and nominated for every award going, only for you to find out it's nearly 3 hours of scenery and 1 word conversations between characters.
I'd like to pick up on a few points made in this thread: I neither consider myself 'Die Hard' or 'Fargo' and can generally enjoy a film on many levels whether it be out-and-out action, top direction, acting, story, cinematography etc However having a movie that fails to make a point at all, or one that could have had an hour culled in editing without any detriment, makes no sense to me - they seem to be riding the wave of 'arty-ness' which critics pick up on in droves!
No country for old men
There will be blood
Michael Clayton
Atonement
Before the devil know you're dead
... to name just a few movies of the last 12 months that all go along the same lines - just my own opinion of course - and i don't make buckets of money reviewing movies for a living!

There a definate problem with critics they try to find these films the can define as master pieces so they can actually give their occupation meaning.

Critics for the most part arnt important. People will still see a film if a critic says it is dire (pirates of the car)

I couldn't agree more!

I enjoyed the film, the end seemed rushed to me though.

Oldish thread i know but just saw the film. Kinda mixed about it - parts of it were quite good but others were disappointing. Could have been better.
