Noisy PS3 Fan is on constantly! Any way of stopping this?

I'm getting annoyed with my PS3 now. After a minute of having it on the big noisy fan comes on as if its overheating... of which i know it won't be.

It isn't even hot now and the PS3 has loads of space yet it still decides the big almighty fan must stay on. Is there any way of stopping this because its in a well ventilated area and I have a pedestal fan blowing onto it just to stay on the safe side.

Is there any way like with the PS2 of cleaning it, i remember i used to hoover the vents on my ps2 to clear out any dust but could anyone advise anything?

The thing that is peeing me off mainly is that it is so god damn noisy and doesn't sound healthy at all although i am assured it will not overheat.

Thanks in advance to all replies.

I would just suggest cleaning the vents, a fan will only kick up a gear when the console is over it's critical heat limit
I'm not sure if using a lens cleaner will work on a PS3 as a PS3 has a Blu Ray laser which is a different distance away compared to a DVD laser
But you can get specific Blu Ray lens cleaners which work by producing wind from holes created in the disc to blow dust away rather than a sweeping DVD cleaner

mine had never made that noise, as previous post, try cleaning the vents

what model is it? 60GB? My 40GB used to do it alot but I did the Fan Test by Holding down the Power Button and tapping the Eject Button at the same time whilst turning it on. I only do it once every 6 Months as it's not recommended but gets all the dust out it's amazing how much crap comes out when I first did it lol, With a 60GB I would not do the Fan Test as I've heard it damages it alot and only the 40GB/80GB can do them safely without burning out anything inside... I only got the Overheating noise when I played GTA4 For some reason and rarely does it with other titles....

basically u just need to open the ps3 up get all the dust out and clean it with abit of pledge and it will work.

Thanks for the replies guys. I got the dyson on it and so much dust came out of the vents i couldn't beleive it. My ps3 was probably struggling to breathe.

Touch wood the fan hasnt come on yet and its quiet as a mouse.

You could either get it repaired or use the disc i talked about in the first post. no need to throw away a valuable PS3 that still works

    Just buy a xbox 360.

I vaguely remember something about the 80GB+ PS3 being able to clean itself in some way, all I remember is that the 60GB (i.e mine) can't do it.

    Post 4^

60Gb can do it but there have been reports that it harms it more than helps it for that version

Yeah i might see if can get it looked at somewhere. Mines a 40gb one but i changed the hard drive to a 320gb one.

    Cheers for the advice guys.

I won't be trying it anytime soon then .

My PS3 doesn't suffer from excessive fan noise but it does suffer from a certain whine when under stress, [email protected] sets it off without fail.

Lool, You know I actually was about to post this comment when this thread started.

"No 360 fanboys getting a 360 will make it worse" But I thought everyone knew that as I posted it last time so I left it.

But i'll make sure I do next time

had the same problem with my 40gb PS3 - I read somwhere than doing the fan blow out / test can void your warranty as only an engineer knows about it and it will record this event in the memory (this may be mis-information)?

Didnt wanna risk it so I took mine back to Game for a replacement, they wanted to do the fan test but Id already formatted the hardrive to remove personal data and said I was entitled to another machine. Id recommend claiming on your warranty if you still have it.
