It's far from a basic phone. It's a symbian S60 smartphone. It does have maps and if you don't want NokiaMaps then you can install something else.

As mentioned above it is a Symbian based Smartphone, like the Nokia N series and the 6220Classic, etc... Im not sure why they only used a 3 MP camera on it though instead of 5 like on most the others, however it is designed as an xpressmusic handset, so I assume their focussing more on the music aspects rather than the camera.

You should be able to install TomTom on it, however you will need an external gps receiver, or you can also use Route66

It has Nokia maps and GPS built in. Check here for all the info you need. There's very little this phone does not have.

Can someone explain to me how Nokia Maps works exactly. A friend of mine has the N95 but said that to use the GPS you also need to be connected to the internet so the phone can download the map data as you use it. I was under the impression that the Maps were on the phone to begin with, and all you need is the GPS switched on.

Little help pretty please?

The map data isn't on the phone to begin with, only the application itself. You can either download the maps on your PC and transfer them to the phone using the Nokia maps loader application or you can use gprs/3g on the go to download map data as required.

The free version of the software only allows you to browse and search the maps, if you want voice navigation then you need to buy a subscription from Nokia.

John

So you can't actually plot a course on Nokia Maps unless you pay for the subscription from Nokia, is that right? All you can do is browse the maps and plot the course yourself.

I managed to get voice directions for a route. May be it's only for a trial period.
Nokia web site says "Walk & Drive" license costs 70 Euro for 1 year.
