    Normal vs Braided usb cable

I need to buy a 3 meter micro usb cable to power my recently brought Cleverdog camera from here.

I've seen that braided/fabric micro usb cables are much cheaper than normal ones (examples below).

My question is, apart from the fabric, is there much difference in performance? A 3M braided cable is £1.27 delivered as opposed to a normal one which is £3.75 delivered.

The same rating will have have the same performance. Worth paying a few pence for gold plated connections for longevity.

In general there are two properties to look for in a cable: conductivity and physical strength. Grossly simplifying for USB applications: look for a cable rated at 24AWG copper which will offer more performance than one rated at 28AWG copper or other metal. If AWG rating is not mentioned, then just like physical strength, you have no perception of quality other than perceived from a few product images. I find the braided ones are nice to use for charging ipad etc in constant use as they seem better joined to the connectors, but a camera one will presumably be fairly static once set up so a cheap one should suffice.

'Braided' cable is standard PVC with a thin sheath on the outside. They tend to quickly tear and look tatty, especially if they rub against anything. I guess they're selling them off because nobody wants them.

USB connectors typically break long before they start to corrode.
