Not letting me cancel gym membership

Found 7th Nov 2016
So I signed up to fitness first and started going. Its been two months and I've found that the opening and closing times just aren't working for me. So I called up to cancel and was told that they can only cancel it at the end of the 12 months unless I got some kind of training injury. I now need help on how to cancel the membership, I have hurt hurt myself at the gym a few weeks back but it wasn't that serious. Can I say that to cancel the membership.

Just cancel the direct debit.

DON'T cancel the DD, they will pursue you and will mark a default on your credit file!

In most instances the only way to get out of a gym contract are either a letter from your doctor saying you are medically unable to attend the gym, or you move a specified number of miles from any FF gyms. Even being made redundant means they usually only reduce the leaving fee by 50%.

Sorry to say you are probably stuck with it for another 10 months.

If you've signed a contract when signing up then you need to refer to the terms and conditions. If you any find anything is the terms which you believe is unfair or a clause which lets you terminate your contract that may be the only way out.

You can do as above, cancel your direct debit however you could be faced with civil action against yourself.

You signed a contract, I suggest you read the small print.

Just cancelling the DD will get you a debt collector and/or court appearance.

As for claiming an injury, you have already perjured yourself on a public forum.

Were you not made aware of the opening and closing times prior to signing a contract?

They are generally open from 6am to 10pm! How are they not working for you?

I agree I should have read the terms, and the 6am to 10pm doesnt work due to changes at work, looks like I'll just have to suck it up, thanks for the replies anyway.

Just now wondering if I do injure myself would I have to get a doctor's note because honestly unless I break a bone I dont ever go to the doctors, and by what extent do they mean injuring myself.

Just ask your doctor for a note, that's what I did when I was changing gyms

Muscle pull/strain, doesn't have to be an obvious injury.

You could always just give your pass to your friend and ask them to pay half so it's less expensive for you? you pay half they pay half? OR go to your dr tell them that you hurt yourself at the gym and you cant go for some time, then just request for some documentation to hand over to your gym.

I have hurt myself in the past whilst at that gym, could I still request documentation for that or would I have to wait and see if I get hurt again before I ask my doctor.

I'm afraid you may be stuck... same happened to me I just tried to make the most of it and go...

What terrible advice, encouraging somebody to waste the time of the NHS. Why on earth would you suggest that?

"Just ask your doctor for a note"

Which doctor were you planning on asking? Who? Strange?

These stupid contracts are whats loosing these gyms custom, why some insist on this model is beyond me. Pure Gym its starting to change things. A few more years and the old school 12 month contract thing will be a thing of the past hopefully!

Possibly. But definitely a conscientious individual who wouldn't waste a national resource which is already stretched to bursting point.

When I said go for a sick note you do it all yourself now and they just sign it... that's how it's done here anyway, would take 2 mins and obviously choose a quite day or walk in day.

Still a wasted two minutes if it's fraudulent. Imagine if everybody took your attitude, how many hundreds of 'two minutes' would be taken up. Try and live outside of your own bubble and think what impact your actions has on others.
