Not so much a deal request...

...more of a request for advice!

I suddenly find myself in need of a new monitor, and I'm in the market for a TFT (what else is there these days?!)

I'm looking for a 19" one, and I've pretty much narrowed it down to these two:

Nice looking Acer (badged under DabsValue)
]http//ww…v=1

Decent looking Video7 TFT (again rebadged)
]http//ww…,13

The Video7 offering is capable of a greater resolution (1440x900 ), but only has a VGA input. The alternative is DVI, but does not seem quite so capable. My Gfx card ONLY had DVI on, so I'd have to convert the VGA to DVI with an adapter.

Should I go for DVI native or the VGA one :-D?

Thanks All,
Losername.

Thanks for the reply - I think that thread was where I saw the V7!

Unfortunately that deal isn't available any more, and the nearest I could find was the DabsVal one.

Any other suggestions?

theres 800 odd available now!.... try the link again?

To be honest, the DVI to vga adapter will only cost a couple of pounds. Theoretically your quality will be slightly better under pure DVI connection but I doubt you'll notice the difference.

The question you want to be asking is about aspect ratio. I saw the V7 one at ebuyer and it looked impressive, it's a widescreen display which is great for dvds (or I was thinking of photoshop - I.e. pallettes at either side of the screen)

The other one you are looking at is a normal ratio monitor. i.e. squarer. Depends what type of work you are looking to do on it I suppose. If you know that the dabsvalue one is an acer screen, then they're usually quite good

P.S. If anybody buys that V7 screen, can they tell me what it's like please?

Personally, I think widescreen is so much better, as you say stanglish "using the sides of the screen" which wouldn't be there otherwise.

I think it looks great too!

Thanks for all the replies.

To be honest, I'd only just noticed it was a wide screen and that kinda put me off. I've seen widescreen laptops and it didn't really work for me, but perhaps it's something you get used to?

I've already got a couple of DVI-VGA adaptors (which came with my gfx card), so that doesn't pose much of a problem.

Decisions decisions

[Edit: Thanks for the update Pixel, when I looked last night, there was stock, but price was way more!]

Well, it's true it takes some getting used to. I remember our first widescreen TV, everything looked wrong for a few weeks. Same as going from CRT monitor on my PC to widescreen on my laptop. Using both, the widescreen is soo much better. I know I'll end up getting one for my PC eventually

The price has gone down to just £123.71p with £4.99p delivery to add.

Thanks Rayman,

So you are almost in the situation I'm concerned about. I work with a laptop all day at work (no widescreen) and I'm now comtemplating a widescreen at home.

Do you find it frustrating/difficult to become accustomed to/at all awkward?

Thanks

Yeah about the same

I prefer working on my laptop and the widescreen is one of the main reasons for that. It was very strange at first, now I love it. The extra side bits [as stanglish said] are really beneficial to me. The laptop screen is 17" and the CRT with my main computer is 19" but square. I've got used to changing to either, but am sure I'd feel better with 19" TFT with that also
