Number of people driving off from Petrol Stations without paying on the rise...

I was chatting to a friend who knows someone working at a filling station and apparently they're experiencing a lot of 'hit n runs' on the pumps, i.e. filling up and driving off without paying.

I was under the impression all filling stations had CCTV to ID any car that came in/out of the stations but apparently not all of them do, and if you know which ones don't you can steal from them (wonderful, eh)

No doubt the cost of this will be blown outta proportion and passed onto the rest of us eventually. 12p rise due to "security and admin charges at filling stations necessary".

Anyone else heard such stuff or is this just 1 unlucky garage?

    drip em dry!

CCTV...if the police know the person.....number plate ID if they register the car in their name.......both of these are probaly common in those stealing petrol......why not pay before they serve thus avoiding the entire theft.

all you do is change the numbers of your plate with black electrical tape ie 6 to 8. 0 to 8 it then reads the wrong number on the cctv.

or just steal someone elses plates thats what happned to my mate the poice popped round one evening and she had been driving around all day with no plates some git nicked them in the night and she hadn't even realised

they put them on their own car filled up the tank and done one

she never had a clue

Police are not bothered about these crimes - they will come out and give a crime number, take the tape and that's the last the garage will hear from them. They expect the garage to make their own private investigation, etc. Before they used to give them the address the car is registered to, so the manager goes around themselves to get the money! (This was five years ago, dunno the procedure now)
Which is why eventually all stations will be pay first - which is logical if you think about it. I don't know why some people get angry about having to pay for their goods first, especially at night.

When I worked at a petrol station (about 4 years ago) the CCTV wasn't good enough to read number plates, the person on the main till was supposed to notice the person driving away and write down the number plate. Sometimes people wrote them down in advance if the customer looked suspicious.
I know some petrol stations have number plate recognition but as above no good with fake plates.

I would whole heartedly support pay in advance pumps, Also means I could fill up with exactly £20 rather than £20.01

The police have always gone after our driveoffs, whether looking out for them on the roads, or phoning them for us, I don't think they are allowed to give us the drivers details just like that anymore. Fake plates is the way to do it, ofcourse the CCTV will still get a good look at your face..so its your risk...
