O2 or other provider whilst in New York - which is best - roam or get a USA sim for the week?

Friend is going to NY next month
Has an o2 mobile quad band handset, not sure of handset specifics
What is best, for that read reliable over cheapest, way to stay in touch with UK?
Please base the assumption on the fact the phone is fully unlocked

It's so a mate can keep in touch with his missus
Hence reliability over cost is the deciding factor

I've heard Verizon is a lot better in Central NY then AT&T.

AT&T is okay in upstate NY.

AT&T you get a free sim and have to buy $25 credit, this was correct at the end of June when I was there, check out the rates to call home aswell.I thought vodafone UK had no roaming charges this summer?

Only from other places in the world who use Vodafone.
They're kinda trialling 3 like home.

Is there anyway then to pre-buy from UK, if needs be, via AT&T themselves a sim card?
Daft as it sounds, do you still have yours, or have i mis-read and you didn't get one?
    Vodafone is not an option
    It's only needed for a week :-(

S'ok, have sorted it i think
Registred on the AT&T forum and got help from there
Gonna get a sim from ebay with credit, and that should be fine
