Oak Fireplace Surrounds and Wooden Floorboard DIY questions!

Found 16th Jul 2009
Hi all - got 2 things ongoing at the moment and was looking for advice or/and help;

I have 2 fireplaces in my lounge and have opened them up and taken back to brick. Im now at the stage that I need to make a fire surround and really like the idea of using Oak Beams (2 uprights and one horizontal for each). I have looked into it and so far can only really find old used railway sleepers that although look great (assuming they are not too worn) they cannot be used as have been treated with Tar/Creasote. Reclamation yards also are not prooving succesful.

Im really struggling to find anywhere that would have this kind of timber but not be treated - has anyone dealt with this before at their own house or have any ideas where I could source the beams from? ideally something like a run down barn that has some internal beams that need disposing of really.

if I cant find anywhere Ebay might be the way to go but they go for about £180 per surround :0(

The other thing I am looking to do is take up the carpet back to the wooden floorboards and sand then treat/varnish them - has anyone had any dealings with this and can offer advice on the best way to go about it? i.e. what to do first etc.

Looking to do it all myself but if its a lot easier to get someone in i may have to go down that route (depending on price).
