Oakfurnitureland - any experience or comments?

Looking to buy a dining table. As with any retailer the "FROM" price easily shoots up to few hundreds more with my own selection of chairs etc. Online reviews show a mixed state.

Wondering anyone had any past experience? I can only believe in them when they say it is solid oak as I have no means to test or challenge them.

After this recent criticism of their descriptions, and their change in the wording of their adverts, I would definitely ask about the makeup of the product components if it is important to you.

they were on watchdog a few months ago over customer complaints

I wouldn't touch them. Their furniture splits and they don't want to know.

I purchased a lot of furniture from them and on the whole its been lovely and fine. One book case was riddled with woodworm in the drawers at the bottom but some spray treatment sorted that and it was after nearly two years so not even sure it was contaminated at purchase.

Most people are bought up around mdf and chip board furniture and so, when they see solid hardwood oak furniture it looks amazing and they buy it. But its all natural wood and will shrink and move, like a new house, as it settles in. This is why you need to oil a new oak kitchen worktop so it doesn't split and crack and is kept nice. People don't understand this and so complain when the furniture splits. Take care of the product and it will last forever. If you don't want to do this buy mdf and chip board stuff.

You know that advert where they show the 8 seater dining table and chairs, with "From £399" plastered all over it??

£399 gets you the coffee table sized table and no chairs.

I was walking past the store and went in for a look.

    Thanks. That's a good insight.

I wouldn't buy again knowing what I know now, my table is fine but the chairs started to split I was just out of the 12 month warranty and they wouldn't help,so they won't be getting my custom again

I've had 12 items of furniture from them as well as a table and 6 chairs about 2 years ago. I've never had a problem (except 1 item was delivered with a tiny bump in, they sent someone to fix it and gave me £40 off) I would definitely recommend and be buying from them again. All of the items are oak. Looking at the reviews I nearly cancelled my order but am very glad I didn't. Don't buy instore go through quidco.

Oak that's imported from Chile to Romania to be assembled, then over to UK to be sold. Impossible to keep it in any sort of decent condition so of course it's going to be riddled with faults.

Im sure a local cabinet maker can build one out of British Oak (or any other timber you might fancy) for a similar price, and to your own style. You'll will have a piece that will last generations.

why would that make it impossible

We bought a dining table from them about 5 years ago. ordered it online and were promised delivery in eight weeks. Months went by and no table appeared, but everytime we rang up we were given an email address to contact, which subsequently bounced the emails back as invalid. Eventually we claimed through our credit card provider and only then did we receive a table (which of course we sent back)
