Ohhh, one of our my fave walks is just 3 miles from there, in Abbeystead. It's the walk around Abbeystead reservoir and it's fab - a great weir and stunning views through forest etc. Just make sure you bring wellies as it will be muddy on parts. Our kids (7 and 10) just love this walk every time; beautiful nature and just the right distance for them to sleep like logs that night! When you drive from Dolphinholme, go straight past the village school and down the hill. Go over the bridge and turn immediately into the car park on the right and park by the river's edge. 100m up the road on the right (over another small bridge) you'll find the beginning of the walk (signposted). Give yourselves a 1 to 2 hours to enjoy the walk fully. You'' come out on the road again just above the school and can walk back to the car along the road. If the weather is clear and crisp, this is a hidden gem known mainly by us locals. Enjoy!!
