Thanks, one is a what bike do i want, the other is about road bikes, i just thought somewhere central for people to talk about biking related stuff would have been a good idea. Nice bike btw, im looking at getting a road bike for work
If any bike enthusiasts are reading this I need some advice. Looking to but a new MTB just for weekend fun rides, towpaths, XC etc and looking to spend £500 - £700. Really like the look of the Cube Analog Disc 2011 for £549 as it seems to be relatively well specc'd for the cash and for the fact it's a bit different and not that common in the UK BUT, a friend of mine can get me a new Specialized Rockhopper 2011 discounted to £575. Any thoughts?

Cubes are nice, if you want bang for buck look at halfords carrera fury, i personally love my RH but you pay a price for the name. Best advice i can give you is sit on and try as many bikes as possible to see what one fits you best.

I am saving for a FS bike atm I am looking at a Cube hanz and a whyte 146

Last year's rockhoppers seem to be within that price if you can find one. They're beautiful bikes.

Am thinking of getting myself a specialized allez and getting into road biking.

Have just installed some clipless pedals to my current bike, running a book on how long til I fall off...
i pick mine up on monday
was also looking at the specialized allez 2010 model ( was on sale and in my price range ) but they'd sold out so opted for the CB san remo 2011 instead .. got it through the cyclescheme ... can't wait to get back on the saddle ... not sure what pedals it comes with tbh... will be a while before i stump up for a decent set of pedals/shoes will just stick with the pedal straps for now

I Just had a good look at the spec on several sites and not one mentions the pedals, not even the CB site, looks like a nice bike tho. Enjoy
Can anyone recommend a road bike with flat handlebars. Am a bit self concious about having one with drop bars, a flat one with bar ends would be better I think. Budget of £600 or so

Just get a MTB and fit tyre for road use
Not just the tyres though is it, bigger wheels, bigger chain, lighter etc.

Thanks though
just buy a hybrid ???
similar to mtb with road tyres .. perfect for inner city commutes

I started looking at those, but I had a go on a friends full on road bike yesterday and found it to be incredibly different to my MTB, the weight, thin tyres etc. made it a real pleasure to ride. I'm always concerned about things which claim to do two things, they tend to not do either particularly well. I have a mtb so think I should get a road bike - Just not sure about the drop bars, I suppose I would get used to them.

Can anyone in laymen's terms tell the the difference between

rutlandcycling.com/268…tml

They are all the same model, similar price but appear to be called different things!!
picked the bike up yesterday .. very nice ride

Very nice, how much did you pay if you don't mind me asking? Am off to the Giant store tomorrow to try a couple out
Also just looking at the Sky Ride website, not particularly at the massive ones, but the local rides seem good. Anybody used it/been on one? Their 'level' system seems a bit odd;

The 'Ride Well' (near the top level) gives an indication of 8-9mph over 12 miles, which doesn't seem that brisk to me. Not fussed but don't want to turn up and be spanked by some lycra clad loons
i paid £450 for the bike, but i know you can get it for £400 in some stores...

Does anyone actually use their mountain bike for proper off roading?

The other day Im riding down a flight of stairs then into a small 2 foot drop in my home town, simple stuff and i see some people on 3 grand bikes look on in amazement and asking how i do that stuff. All they do is ride up and down. What a waste

Nice bike, I am using a hardtail for about a year then I will consider getting a Full Sus or even a DH bike
Banned
Ideally id like 3 bikes as mine is a sort of all mountain/freeride compromise.

One full on down hill bike, one all mountain full sus and lastly a hardtail with lockout front sus for getting about town.

Original Poster
I am new to MTB'ing so started with a hardtail to ride around trail centres go gain some experience and skills, to be honest the bike rides real nice, very light and controllable what the front wheel does the rear follows, it is very forgiving on the bumpy stuff, the carbon frame helps there and the 150mm rev.
You guys seem to be well into your mods, I have a Giant Boulder at the moment, looking to get a road bike within the next few months. The only mod I have made to my bike is to fit SPD pedals, have you any suggestions on what I could change to make it a little lighter?

This isn't my actual bike, but the same year (judging by the colour scheme)

How long should bike tyres last? Got about 1500 miles out of the back one that came with my Specialized Globe Vienna, it's now shredded to bits on the sides. Is this normal or did it just come with bad tyres?
