Oh dear! what have I done to my PC? AVG related..

I am open to all suggestions on this one as I am plumb out myself. Yesterday I was getting warnings about AVG being out of date, therefore I downloaded AVG8.5 and installed it. However when it told me that settings would not update until I had restarted I chose to 'restart later'. I then later ran Advanced Windowscare professional to clear out temp files etc. Finally when I switched it off it gave me the option to 'install important updates' prior to shutting down (Windows updates I assume) - which I chose.

Later when I switched the PC back on I found I was unable to start commonly used applications like Mozilla and Trillian, getting the error message 'Windows cannot access the specified device, path or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to acces the file' - however I have checked and my account has Admin rights. I then tried to start Mozilla from the c;prog file firefox path but again it would not let it start. However some apps that I access on a less often basis seem to start and work fine.. Also Outlook was looking for an AVG 7.5 file that wasnt there. The other problem is that when I run IE altho it will browse fine I cant type anything in the boxes, or cut and paste from anything I have typed in notepad. No errors come up though, it just wont get a cursor in the boxes. I am alos unable to start Security Centre to check my firewall is running (it keeps alerting it isnt) and when I try and start my Firewall Comodo I get an error saying app failed to initialise.

I have tried doing a restore through Windows how that fails too with a runtime error, and then theres no calendar restore point. I also tried to use Windows Advanced Care to go back to an earlier restore point, with no joy. Finally I also cant open Internet Options in IE.

Any ideas to whats happened - some sort of mishmash when AVG, Windows Updater and Windows Advanced Care have all contended? Also any suggestions to how I get it all working again without seemingly the ability to restore. Just to add I am running XP, sp2 I think.

    Thnaks for any pointers.

Also when I try and run Windows Media Player it tells me its not properly installed and to install a new version from Microsofts site. IE is also not showing a lot of pictures on pages.

Yep you have updated all 3 with out reboots after each one and therefore its too much to handle. See if you have a restore point in the last month. If that fails start to uninstall each one and reboot and reinstall. Or try to update the OS

Thanks - no restore points available Im afraid. So uninstall AVG and the Windows updates?

First start up in Safe Mode with Network - press F8 until you get a choice of screens.

Then uninstall AVG & Advanced Windowscare and reboot

If things then work reinstall AVG and reboot

Then reinstall Advanced Windowscare and reboot

Though frankly I wouldn't use either of these - Try Avira for anti-virus, CCleaner for tidying your compute up & Superantispyware to deal with spyware and the like

I think i would do that. You are on SP2 install sp3. I dont think you windows updates updated the system propelry. The restore point is weird as when windows updates do run it creates a restore point.

Just create one now just in case, But firstly let windows update the system again

Ok thanks for that advice - F8 doesnt appear to do anything on startup, or f10 for that matter so am currently unable to choose to start in safe mode. AVG is already uninstalled, Advanced Windows care wasnt actually doing an update to its software so does that need taking off?

Unfortunately I cant create a SYS restore point as it wont let me type in the box to name it... Best way of getting sp3? Straight off the windows site? Or should I go to check for updates first and download some updates rather than sp3?

Also as I cant get into Security Centre I cant send it off to look for updates for Windows. When I go to the Windows update site it asks me to install active X then I run that and it says 'Internet Explorer (add ons disabled) mode only prevents the use of Active-x controls, including those used by Microsoft update. To get updates using this browser mode turn on Automatic updates or visit the windows update site' - unfortunately I cant turn on auto updates because I cant get into security centre or into IE options - the latter giving the message "The operation has been cancelled due to restrictionsin effect on this computer. contact sys admin" - however I am the one with admin rights?

I had major probs with it too and just went back to my old version and deleted the new one.

Best way of getting SP3 is striaght from windows site and take it from there m8

Thanks, tried that unfortunately the site doesnt like it, complains about not being to ascertain windows update status. Anyway I downloaded it from somewhere else and ran it but reported it as corrupt. Have passed it to my guru know, he suspects virus but will sort it out whatever I am sure.
