I know what you mean. We blew 2 grand on one on my project, wish we had just bought a few regular lappys and stuck ubuntu on them. Cool for showing off on trains, but otherwise, meh, macs ain't really my cup of tea.

you just click on it then press the backspace key don't you?

Can we see a screen shot of your problem?

Excellent! Gotta say I don't know how to do barely anything on my macbook... Word is a whole new kettle of fish! Good luck with that assignment

iWork '09 is where it's at. No Microsoft rubbish!
iLife '09 looks amazing! If you've not seen the video of what it can do then you should go to the apple site and check it out!

And for fun, try hitting:  + alt + ctrl + 8
Press it again to revert.

I tried iwork '08 and I gotta say it would not have been sufficient to get me through my degree, but I am disappointed by office mac, having no right mouse button is the killer! I think Microsoft make **** software for macs deliberately.

Where is this apple shaped key?

For an easy right click while using the track pad.
Go to System Preferences > Track pad > Check the box for "Tap trackpad using two fingers for secondary click"
Then you only have to tap the pad with two fingers and it registers as a right click.
Also two finger scrolling is a lifesaver but it's on as default i think.

I find that iWork does everything that Office does but much more smoothly.
No kidding about the Microsoft software though. You tried MSN? Gah. No webcam support at all. And we all have built in webcams. What a joke.

 = cmd

Done it! lol!

If you set preferences for a right click, can you use Word etc as you would on a pc?? MSN is so pants anyway it is annoying that I have to use microsoft software at all, Hotmail had a problem with cookies for 6 months so I had to delete all my Hotmail cookies everytime I wanted to log into my account.

With iwork I thought it would be a gamble for uni work because all assignments set were specified Times new roman size 12 and stuff like that. Also some of the work which we did on excel was quite advanced and I think Numbers is not really a patch on excel if you are using it in an advanced way for statistics etc.

How long does it take to pick up all the mac stuff... I know how to do command n to open a new window but I find it really annoying that when you have safari open it is difficult to flick from one screen to another unless you minimize them into the dock.... am I missing something?

Yea, it just adds the right click element to the trackpad so that you don't have to use cmd+click for do right click.

I never really use Numbers in graphics lol but I don't have any problems with Pages to do my essays etc.

I've been using mac's for a couple of years now. Being quite computer literate I picked it up quite easily but I wanted to know more so I did quite a lot of self exploration, like knowing the shortcuts and things.

You want to be using tabs, then you only have one window open. It's Command+t to make a new tab in the window.

If you have lots of windows open most of the time or like to use a new window for browsing then I'd recommend you set up "Active Screen Corners" (found in Exposé & Spaces in System Preferences) and set one of them to "All windows". So that when you move your mouse into that corner, you can see all the windows you currently have open.
You should have a Fn Key (F1, F2 etc.) assigned to do the job of activating "All Windows" but it depends on which macbook you have (different keyboard layouts).

Here's a screen shot of my Active Screen Corners settings:

Excellent! That was really helpful! I think I might have to start researching some of the features of my laptop. When I was a teenager I would pick IT stuff up so quickly but since I have left uni I have been so slow to pick technical things up! I didn't even realise you could 'right click' using the command key in word which was probably why everything was taking me so long!! (Try even writing a basic letter without right clicking... impossible!!)

I am definitely a mac convert after getting frustrated with PCs that take hours to load up and require so much maintenance to do very simple things... microsoft seem to think that the answer to their operating systems being so inefficient is for everyone to buy faster computers. Since the majority of what I do is basic internet surfing my mac has been sooooooo smooth and quick. However I definitely think it is time to learn how to use some of its potential.... maybe justify the amount I spent lol!

Thanks again for the advice, you have pretty much doubled my knowledge in one fail swoop! I really need to stop moving my mouse from corner to corner though......

No problem, happy to help

I can't imagine never using right click.... lol

Oh and another useful shortcut:
Hover your mouse over any word on the screen (the arrow will change to a I shape thing),
then press cmd + ctrl + d
An instant definition of that word.

That is crazy!!! You've defo got me wondering what else my laptop can do now!! Given me a bit of motivation to learn the macbook lingo
