Oil spill 'an environmental 9/11'

Banned
I liked Obama.
I guess I'd have liked anyone after that muppet Bush took the world to war with his gun tooting ways.

But Obama has to be careful now. To suggest the BP oil is spill is similar to 9/11 gives rise to unnecessary rumour, chit chat and unwarranted anger against the UK.

Some of those elastic top jean wearers in the south of the US who hate us anyway, will no doubt take this message as an excuse to provoke the idea that BP are in some way terrorists!

Nice move Obama.

It is pretty stupid, one being an accident causing huge environmental damage and the other being a terrorist action causing huge loss of life!?!?!

where's the parallel?

I'd like to know why the company who cause death and destruction in Bophol were given immunity. Corperate manslaughter is far more serious than causing a messy beach I'd have though..... unless of course the company was American!

.

I can't see any comparisons between the two events at all. Yes, the oil spill is major and very damaging to the sea life/birds/environment but 9/11 destroyed so many lives/families etc. He's talking out of his backside!

Did you see the interview where some stupid yank wearing a FUBP tee shirt was pressing for a seizure of the company! The only regretable thing from BP was the stupid comment from the CEO saying the spill "was a drop in the ocean". He should have been sacked for that. But its too easy to lose sight of the fact this was an accident.... and the fact the majority of the employees on the rig were Yanks!

Ilove the US, I really do, I`ve lived there after 9/11 felt their pain, but this comparrison is just WRONG WRONG WRONG, The WORST enviromental disaster has to be Bhopal India, where an american company is still killing citizens 25 YEARS LATER, over 15,000 people have died due to being gassed and poisoned by battery acid, have the US apologized or compensated the Indians, NO THEY HAVEN`T, SO PUT A SOCK IN IT obama, and stop wiping billions off our pensions

No I didn't, wish I had tho! It is an accident of course, how the yanks can possibly think otherwise I have no idea. 9/11 certainly WASN'T an accident, thats why he can't compare.

To be honest the full quote is this

"In the same way that our view of our vulnerabilities and our foreign policy was shaped profoundly by 9/11, indelibly by 9/11, I think this disaster is going to shape how we think about the environment and energy for many years to come,” the president said."

So he was not comparing directly to 9/11 but how attitudes will change the way people think for years to come which is probably true.

Maybe he meant that both events had to do with OIL?!?

So how did Obama get the Nobel Peace prize, with this show of anti-English rhetoric

are we gonna see the true colours of this president now........

What anti-English rhetoric? He has been criticising a multi national company which has been responsible for spewing a lot of oil in the gulf of Mexico. Which will effect jobs, tourism and kill a lot of wildlife in this region. Also aren't 37% of BP shareholders American.

It isn't. If it was it would be anti-British, but it would still be wrong.

And now for the full quote.

"In the same way that our view of our vulnerabilities and our foreign policy was shaped profoundly by 9/11, I think this disaster is going to shape how we think about the environment and energy for many years to come,"

Which isn't as shocking or headline-worthy as some are suggesting, but actually makes perfect sense.

even so, he knows by just mentioning 9/11 in the same sentence when talking about the BP situation will allow sparks to fly, it was a planned divisive comment really

Does anybody here seriously think that America gives a flying about Britain? Obama is appealing to American at the end of the day, and blaming us is a good way of getting back in next term. Plus him and David Cameron havn't spoken since they came into power (unless they have in the past week or so)

Case closed.

Obama was the first leader to speak to Prime Minister Cameron (still doesn't right) and they spoke on Saturday as well.

The whole Bhopal India thing is a bit like the whole 'Don't mention the war' scene from Fawlty Towers.

Quote from Cameron just after his 'important' phone call to Obama " I mentioned it once (Bhopal India) , but think I got away with it"
Things get brushed under the carpet when it suits them, but boy can they kick up a stink when they want to. I just wish we could end our 'special' relationship, so we can bring troops home and stop following them all over the middle east as they try to scoop up any oil rich state they can bully.

Do you think the US are ever gonna pull out of Afghanistan when there is an estimated $1TRILLION worth of minerals and gold to be had, Wake up, thats worth all those troops that are gonna die, BIG BUSINESS always get what they want

We should team up with the Ruskies and go to war with the US

The news said that 65% of the operation was owned by BP with the rest being a collection of international companies. If you take that around 35-40% of BP is owned by American shareholders. Depending on the remaining make-up of the other 35% who owned the operation, it could be argued that the operation was mainly a US owned one!

Having the US President bashing BP is understandable but purely counterproductive, what can the US Government do about the situation! We have the world foremost power unable to do anything! The only people who can manage the situation and have the expertise are BP and the oil industry. If this disaster was not BP's responsibility, we would still have BP's expertise managing or assisting with the problem, working with the US Government.

Everyone seems to have forgotten about the 11 people who died in this disaster, ultimately caused by the worlds inexhaustible thrust for oil! :x

Exactly. Politicians have to be careful.

Meet the Parents:

Norm: I got a plane full of people saying you threatened that stewardess.
Greg Focker: I was not threatening her. I was just trying to get my bag into the overhead storage thing...
Norm: You were acting like a maniac and you threatened her with a bomb.
Greg Focker: No, I said I didn't have a bomb.
Norm: But you said bomb.
Greg Focker: I said, "It's not like I have a bomb".
Norm: You said "Bomb" on an airplane.
Greg Focker: What's wrong with saying 'Bomb' on an airplane?
Norm: You can't say 'Bomb' on an airplane!
Greg Focker: Bomb bomb bomb, bomb bomb bomb bomb bomb bomb bomb. You gonna arrest me? Bomb bomb bomb bomb! During the war I was a BOMBadier!
Norm: You assaulted an airline employee and I oughta put you away for years!

It seems some people believe its a simple case that someone just left the tap on overnight - not that this was a big industrial accident where people were killed!
