its not really possible as when you install most programs they make an entry deep within the computers registry.

Unless someone here can offer some amazing piece of software, you pretty much better start looking for the disks or an alternative im affraid.

A couple of things can work if you copy the whole folder over (World of Warcraft is one) but the list is small.

You can use Symantec Ghost (or other cloning software) to take an image of your PC (or do disk to disk) and this often works. Sometimes it causes your new PC to constantly loop and reboot (because of the different drivers loaded) but generally running the Operating System disk again and doing a repair sorts this. I've done this hundreds of times.

Chances are he won't be able to do this. Old PC probably has IDE drive depending on age and new will have SATA drives.

Easy option is to create an image of your existing PC using Ghost etc then transfer the image onto new PC using USB hard drive or DVD. Personally, i would rather start from scratch and have a clean PC to work with, without all the cr*p that's build up over the years. Once all the software is installed, take an image of the PC then and you have an instant backup of a clean, working PC.

Doesn't Windows Easy Transfer Wizard cover the transfer of program settings and files? I used a Belkin Transfer cable and the Easy Transfer Wizard to move from XP to Vista.

I've never used it but i think it does only as you say above - program settings. It wouldn't transfer all the registry settings and dlls, etc. Unless it's changed dramatically over the years.

I just open the PROGRAMS AND FEATURES control panel option and take a screen print to save writing it all down.

and make sure you backup outlook properly. Taking a copy of the folder wont work. You have to export the messages, account, contacts then import them back.

best tip is to take your HDD out and put it in your new PC as a slave drive until you are sure you have re-installed all your data. Or back all your C drive up to an ext.hdd

Unless the new computer has exactly the same motherboard - and even then - you will need to reinstall the OS.
