My dad is nearly 69 and still works full time. He's self employed so not really taking a young persons job. The trouble is he is worried he could live for another 20+ years and won't beable to afford it if he retires.

Hardly surprising, the state pensions paid out in this country are truly disgraceful.

The state pensions might not be great, but they are struggling to cover the costs of all 65+ years at the moment. With the number of people living to 80+ and 90+ rapidly growing, to the point where the number of tax-payers is less than the number of retirees and children, its a reality that people need to work longer and the retirement age must go up.

They really shouldn't be, pensioners have actually paid via NI contributions for their pensions, governments have squandered their money, it isn't the fault of the pensioners that this has happened.

Oh and of course, every pensioner that is forced to work, is blocking a job for somebody else, some that have never worked a day in their lives.

how else would we pay for those that dont? The benefit system costs more than the entire amount raised from personal income tax each year!

It was never meant to work like this.

so how you differentiating between the benefit scroungers who are now pensioners......the immigrant refugeess.....who are now pensioners and the people who have worked hard all their lives, who re now pensioners?

are all people the same once you get to be a pensioner regardless of how much youve contributed to the system......or bled it dry?

only if you can put away about £250,000+

My Dad saved a small amount every week for 40 years (£20) and now gets £40 per week from it. This takes my parents above the pension credit limit so they get no benefit perks at all so have to pay council tax of £180 per month.

His mates never saved a bean and are better off than them!

A complete joke of a system

So true - I think people in their 20s and 30s need to face up to the reality that IF they get a pension it won't be until they're at least 70.

Did he have the option to take out a 25% lump sum at the start of retirement?

I put in 15% of my salary total into my pension. Because it goes in tax free that's an extra 40% going in and the lump sum at retirement shouldn't be too shabby touch wood. But also going to buy properties to rent out. Which will pay their own mortgages off while I am working then when I retire ill use them to suppliment my pension.

    That's the plan anyway.

Tough to hear that about your father. I hope he is in good health

Nope the " scroungers " that are now pensioners, will get Pension Credit and will in most cases be better off than those that have worked and saved for their retirement and only get the measly state pension.

no lump sum as pot was under £50,000

my point basically was if you cant save a lot in a private pension, then as things stand, it really is a waste of money. Hopefully the tories will change the current state of affairs whereby lifelong pension savers can be worse off than the feckless!

I saved around £100,000 into a pension fund when I worked and really wish I hadnt now.

    he's well thanks

Well one thing is certain, nothing will realistically change your race, or the colour of your skin, but we will all ( if we are lucky ) get old, so this pension stuff applies to us all.

it was exactly meant to work like this, you think they care about you? you think they care if you have to work till you die? no, why because your just a aniamal on a farm, and they are using you for your energy (money), you keep working and getting taxed 30% of your paycheck every month, pay inflated prices, lol work 4 ever.

your blinded if you think they want you to retire soon as poss. They want you to work long as poss, and keep consuming.
