Olympic refugee team arrives in Rio 2016 athletes' village to rapturous welcome

Here is a beautiful story of compassion and solidarity with those fleeing war and oppression.

A team of 10 refugee athletes who will compete at Rio 2016 were welcomed with cheers, music and dancing when they arrived in the Olympic Village on Wednesday (3 August).

Hundreds of athletes from other countries were there to greet the refugees at a special welcoming ceremony, joined by media from all around the world.

Huge respect and good luck to them.

They'll know Im not working if I'm laughing!

Bit of a drop in the ocean, but doubtless it'll give some a nice warm feeling while they forget the millions of other less fortunate refugees, many of whom may be more aware of where their next attack will come from than their next meal.

Refugee athletes. Fit enough to compete in the Olympics. Not fit enough to fight for their country.

I'd imagine the odds of being killed for participating in the Olympics is probably lower than fighting for/against their country.

What nation are the refugees competing for? This isn't meant to be a sarcastic remark.

I'm not sure that you know how far away from the mainstream your views are, to view refugees with such a callous lack of empathy is very strange and extremely right wing.

If we have a war and your unarmed family run away from armed murderous people to save themselves then they will be refugees.

Is that leap in imagination really so difficult to make?

Thanks. I'd be interested to know if this has ever happened before. I always thought that the Olympics was based on Countries rather than grouping of people.

And I'm sure my main priority if this ever happened would be to become an Olympian.

From that point of view why should anyone bother with the Olympics or any other sport for that matter.

Billions of people take part in sports and don't get tangible results afterwards, are they all wrong too Stuart?

    What do you think?

Why do some people criticise people who are trying to achieve greatness? These are refugees fleeing some of the most dangerous places on Earth yet they're still capable of doing something most of us could never dream of.

That deserves praise. It represents the very best ideals of the Olympic games and yet some people can only criticise.

Our country gets to take part in the Olympics because of the millions of men and women who put their lives on the line and have fought and died for the freedom of this country and future generations of British people, where would we be now if they had turned on their heels during the Blitz or refused to fight for our European allies,i couldn't even imagine the Brits lived through the Wars last century running away and claiming refugee status, and especially the men running to safety and leaving the women and kids behind.

I think there's a slight difference between people living in a country in the midst of a civil war, and Britain in the 1940s. X)

    They're all cowards.

How on Earth do we have such a division in this country between how we view refugees competing in an Olympics.

Is it something to do with natural empathy, or upbringing? A young girl who flees a war-torn country with her sisters, swims for freedom and then looks to compete in an Olympic games can actually be viewed by some people as a coward?

Is that what this country has now become?
