    OMG What a day!

What a **** night I've just had! My youngest took our dog out for a walk with his mate and his dog. I was upstairs when they came back and they all went outside into the garden.
I then heard screams from the boys...I ran downstairs as quick as I could to find his pals dog had grabbed our guinea pig (which had been in the garden) and killed it.
The boys were in a terrible state, I sent his mate home with my eldest, wrapped up the guinea pig and tried to console my little one.
    God it was awful!
My little lad is totally shocked and understandably very quiet - I just don't know what to say.
I told him that she wouldn't have suffered cos she would have probably had a heart attack when she was grabbed (which I know isn't true as she was alive when I got there) but I don't know what else to say

Yes, I rang his mam to check he was ok and to say I didn't blame him or the dog.

What a terrible thing to happen, your poor little boy must be so upset.

That is awful, something similar happened to my hamster a long time ago.

My dad trapped it in the door and killed it.

Why, was the dog loose, though?

They had just come in from walking the dogs and had took them through into the garden to give them a drink. The guinea pig was wandering around the garden freely and the boys hadn't realised. Our dog is so used to her and never bothered her, but the other dog just instinctivley attacked her. He is Springer Spaniel.

Oh dear, note to oneself, always check the garden is clear of small animals, when entering larger animals.

I know, I hadn't realised she was still out, I had told my lad to put her away earlier, it's a hard lesson for him to learn:cry:

this must have been pretty bad for all parties involved!

My goodness, how traumatic. The spaniel probably thought it was a toy or something. I'm thinking that your lad has maybe seen nature programmes where young predators ( lion cubs and so on) pounce on things , playing to learn what do to later. Can you use that to try to explain what happened?
A very upsetting episode for you all.

It sure is, these things happen unfortunately, i don't have pets because they always break your heart when they die.

It could have been worse, you could have killed it and been bad mummy forever.

    Good luck

Well I've managed to get him to sleep on a promise that tomorrow we will go to the pet shop.....but just to look.
I want him to wait a couple of weeks to decide what he wants to do.

    Ignore the ignorant.

Really sorry to hear what happened, I know that if one of my dogs had been there she would have attacked it too, the other one would have ignored it. Hope your son and his mate get over the shock real soon xx

dont think its the dogs fault but if i was the dogs owner i would have phoned u straight away to appoligise and to ask how your son was

I know, now tht I've calmed down a bit I do think his friends mam could have rang me to ask how things were. I rang her to check how her lad was last night, thought she would have rang today......
My husband has just took my little lad to bury the guinea pig this morning, he seems a lot better and he slept ok, I think it was just an horrible think for them to see.
He's a bright lad and understands that the dog was only doing what comes naturally to him.

This thread reminded me of a story i was told about my grandad (where you told your sun the pig prob had a heart attack and didnt feel the pain)

My Grandad used to work down the mines in Durham and so when he got the chance to go on one of these "working mine tours" where everything is set up how it used to be he was down there like a shot.

On the way round they had a mockup of a large work-horse pulling something along.. A little girl asked "What happens to the horses when they get old?" The tour guide decided to be nice and not reveal the truth so said "As a thankyou for all their hard work they are allowed to live in fields for the rest of their life". Just as he was finsihed my grandad piped up and said "Youve obviously never worked down a mine then! They work the horses til they drop down dead and then if they cant get the body into a mine cart they snap its legs" Everyone was pretty shocked.

Typical North East tact! The funny thing is we live in Sunderland....not far from Durham!
