# One Question.

Hypothetical here.

Two doors.

One leading to hell, one leading to heaven, they are both identical. The doors of both are guarded by Angels, one tells lies and one tells the truth. The one that tells lies covers the door to hell and the one that tells the truth to heaven.

What question do you ask to find out which is the correct door to use, you can only ask one question and the same question to both.

(Assuming you want to go pick the correct choice.)

Ricky Gervais show.

what is your(mine) date of birth

probably im being simplistic but if you just ask the question "is this the door to heaven"-the one who always lies would say no and the one who always tells the truth would say yes?

edit-scrub that-doesnt work-doh! cos they would both say yes!

Are you an Angel?

Yeah, except I'd say is the door on the left the doorway to heaven, being more precise.

Wasn't it in a children's film called Labyrinth?

theres a really simple answer......damn it what is it?!

^^this???

Could be.

But could both these know this already?

Maybe I'm missing something big but surely you could basically ask them anything? Is two plus two four, the one that says yes is the one guarding heaven

But the one who tells a lie will also answer yes !...:p

what will the other guy answer if I asked him what door you stand in front of?

Point towards the direction you approached the doors from & ask "Is the door to hell this way?".

Easier question(s):

"What is 2 + 2?"

(or any question you are confident they would both know the answer to, such as...)

"How many doors are you covering?"

(and so on)

Can i take a look inside?

Ask either Angel what the other angel would say was the Heaven door and then go through the opposite door.

But then it's not actually lying??

You therefore ask one Angel what the other Angel would answer if you asked them what door they where in front of. The answer will always contain a lie.

The door would therefore be the opposite of the answer given. From there you know what each door goes to Hoggle.

Did she say "down". Too late now!

Ask both of them, "what door is the other angel guarding?"

Go through the opposite of what is said.

Reason: one will tell the truth about what his counterpart is guarding, and the other will lie about what his counterpart is guarding. Therefore, both will say the same door and leave you with the opposite of what is said:

The truthful angel will always tell you what the other one is guarding, whereas the other one will tell you the one his guarding. As there is only 2 options, the lying angel will give away the right answer.

Depending on the truthful angel's religion they may answer 'no' like the lying angel does (as they do not believe hell exists).

Exactly.

One will tell you the truth about the other one lying.
The other will tell you a lie about the other one telling the truth.

Both will tell you the same door thus leaving you with the correct door.

What if both angels just say "a lie" as the response to your question?

They won't.

The riddle states you get to ask them both the same question once.
Im assuming they will both answer in response to the question instead of saying "a lie".

EDIT: the answer will always be "Hell" from both of them - NEVER "Heaven".

It doesn't matter what order you ask them in - the lying Angel is always going to lie.
If you ask him/her what the other one is guarding he will always say the opposite answer to what the other one is guarding thus unintentionally telling you the one he is guarding (Hell).

The truthful Angel will always tell you the honest answer to what the lying Angel is guarding. He will say "Hell" as this is what the other one is guarding.

It doesn't matter which one you ask first the answer will always be the same - "Hell".

Just take the opposite door - "Heaven" - to what is said by both of them.

What if both angels just say "a lie" as the response to your question?

dtovey89

They won't....

If your question is worded, "What would the other angel say if I ask what is behind the door they are guarding?", then the answer of "A lie" is a possible response.

dtovey89

They won't....

They will both say "a lie" then.

However, there would need to be some mention of the door from both Angels otherwise the riddle would not work.

EDIT: simply rephrase the question to "what door is the other Angel guarding?" By mentioning the other Angel and the door they will have to reply with "Hell. The response of "a lie" would not be a valid answer as it does not respond to the simple but direct question.
I should have made this clear in my first post

YOU: "what door is the other angel guarding?"
TRUTHFUL ANGEL (guarding Heaven): "Hell"
LYING ANGEL (guarding Hell): "Hell"

Both will say "Hell". Remember one always tells the truth and one always lies. By asking the direct question "what door is the other one guarding" the lying Angel will confirm the truthful Angel's response. He has to lie about the truthful Angel guarding Heaven so will be forced to say Hell.
Proceed to take the opposite door to the ones answered and be welcomed by Morgan Freeman himself.

My brain hurts.....

I think it's already been suggested but wouldn't just asking them both 'is the other angel guarding the door to hell?' be enough? It doesn't matter what the lying, evil soab says does it? Just listen to the truthful one says.

Or is that too simplistic?

Banned

If they both answer hell how are you any better off than you were before?

Banned

Ask them "Do I deserve to be a helper".

The one that says no, is the door you should take if Heaven is your desired destination. X)

Does Karl Pilkington have a face like a f' orange?

dtovey89

The main point is you have to ask one angel what the other would say about what door he is guarding. It is not enough to ask one what door the other is guarding. What you are looking for is not a deffinate door but a definate lie. by asking one what the other would say you get either the truth about a lie or a lie about the truth. Either ends up with a lie so the answer about the door is a lie. depending what the answer is you choose either that or the other door based on the knowledge that the answer is a lie and the opposite is true.

How do you know which one is telling the truth as they both say yes or both say no depending on which door they are in front of.
