It is the milky juice in the onions that makes you cry. So to reduce the effect, always make sure the onions are well refrigerated and very cold when you cut them, it makes a big difference. If you have time to put the onion from the fridge into the freezer for ten mins before you cut it, it should work even better. I've found that to be the main thing that works, whilst also being convenient. My friend chops onions on her cooker hob with the extractor hood on above it and says that works too. I can't comment either way as I don't have one. I just know the "spoon in the mouth" and all that, doesn't work! Good luck.

    Cut them underwater.

breathe through your mouth and open all nearby windows / doors

    works every time

I feel your pain....absolutely hate anything to do with onions....i find some onion is stronger than others nonetheless they al make me cry....i dread the day im ha recipe that requires a lot of onion in it...

I do find if I peel them and then soak in water kinda reduces the fumes so to speak and that they aren't as bad to chop....i also use a nicer dicer or vee slicer to speed up the cutting process.

Wear contact lenses, i have no issues at all. Of course, i would prefer to be able to see more than a foot away without assistance, but hey we all work with what we're given!

    wear some goggles

Enzymes that were kept separate now are free to mix with the sulfenic acids to produce propanethiol S-oxide, a volatile sulfur compound that wafts upward toward your eyes. This gas reacts with the water in your tears to form sulfuric acid. The sulfuric acid burns, stimulating your eyes to release more tears to wash the irritant away

wow. Lots of scientific terminology...! Thanks for explaining. must i add love your username x

Onions produce the chemical irritant known as syn-propanethial-S-oxide. It stimulates the eyes' lachrymal glands so they release tears. Scientists used to blame the enzyme allinase for the instability of substances in a cut onion.

information from google not me, im not mega nerdy

Remember, if you're a gullible idiot, you should always throw any unused onion away, as they absorb bacteria and become toxic.

Onions, like any other vegetable, feel pain when you cut them.

When the onions 'cry' and release their vapours, they are making you aware that you are causing them distress.

My advice is not to use knives on these poor defenseless vegetables.

Leave the bottom (root) of the onion on till last, simply peel the rest and chop it down to the root then bin the root bit.

The reason being is it is the base of the onion that releases the enzymes that cause the tears so if you leave this still last you can quickly bin it once you get to that part, hence no released enzymes and no tears.

How do you know if you're cutting off the onion's bottom or it's face?

Either way I feel bad for Mr Onion.

use a sharp quality knife with no ridges. Ripping the onions with a blunt knife releases more of the juices.
