Onkyo Amp Blown

Yes I should have walked away from tis unknown brand & bought a sony, but it was a good price at the time!!

Anyway ive had it for three years & not really used it that much until this week. I finally managed to rig it all up via HDMI/optical etc & has been working a treat until this morning. Was watching Sky via the amp and all of a sudden it went off, no standby light.

I unplugged and tried again, it came on for around 10 seconds then went off again. Tried same again, but nothing this time around. The amp was plugged into an extension lead & this is still working OK.

Could either my SKY box or media PC (both connected via hdmi) have blown this amp?

I have tried fuse & directly in socket, but same problem. Luckily I took out richersounds 5yr warranty & theyve said to take it back in for repiar.

Any ideas? Onkyo TXSR605

Because he didn't read your opening comment and looked up Onkyo in his database and thought he was being clever.

Given the current through an hdmi cable is negligible, if any, it would seem highly unlikely something connect to the amp via that method would cause it to blow. If anything, they draw current.

It's doubtful your feeds will have taken out the amp more like the lack of use. It will just be one of those things and has for the brand been unknown they are much more highly rated than Sony in the amp field and give out real good value for money. I also have one and so do a few i know and cannot fault them. They may be ugly to look at but the do the job very well. I wouldn't be too worried about it been an Onkyo at all.

didnt think it could be the hdmi ports. lack of use is probable. been gathering dust since jan 2008 really. like i said its going back to RS tomorrow. any one had experience of their warranty etc. plain and simple or pain in the backside?

the comment about it being a duff brand is tongue in cheek. checkout Loughboro Guy's take on Onkyo!!

It could be your wiring of the speakers. When it switches off, does the red light flash on the front of the unit? If so, it's the units built in surge protection kicking in. Make sure you are using quality connectors at the back of the Onkyo for speakers, etc
