I feel like I've wasted a whole day today!
Trying to balance the idea of usability for the client with no costs attached. I've gone so far with OS but every time I'm inputting new code, I'm thinking "client won't have a fudging clue how to do this".

Best control panel for usability I know of is freewebstore.org but at £30 a month (client has over 3.5k products to sell), it's not fitting within brief.

Anyone know of a client friendly store builder similar to freewebstore that is free (for unlimited products)?

OSCommerce is acctually very easy to use, a lot of hosts offer a easy install through cPanel so all the complicated stuff is done - What code are you inputting?

There are a few WordPress plugins that can turn WordPress into an online shop, I can't remember the names though.

I need to hand this over at some stage to the client (who has zero ability with a computer) so at least I can teach them the decent control panel that freewebstore has.

The whole idea of modules and correcting code will scare the hell out of them.

I thought opencart would be a good idea, but then to do something basic like import CSV files, I had to add three lines of code via FTP just to allow it to happen.

I don't want to have phonecall after phonecall once this is live.

Any advice on the wordpress plugin much appreciated?

Yeah, tried all three but the client just won't have the knowledge to take this on. Need something as easy as pie (like freewebstore) - click and play!

Zen cart is built around quite an out dated framework on old software.

Magento is considered one of the best open sauce carts today.

But why do you ask these questions on a shopping forum....why not go to the e commerce section of UK business forums and ask the people that use these things to make their living. they will answer your question specifically and take into consideration what checkout system you wish to use and what promotional features you would like to incorporate into the shop.

Cheers - usually it wouldn't be a problem, I'd just knock up a drupal site usually but this has to be stand alone for the client to use.

Looks like Word Press might be the way forward then - I'll look into it. Thanks for the info, for some reason it never entered my head to go that route.

    Cheers!

Yeah, the free thing is key. Client has called me since and is actually happy with paying that £30.
I will certainly look into the WP option though!

    Thanks all, great help!
