Orange broadband gone up in price - Virgin or Plusnet????

We've been with them ever since they were freeserve as price and service has always been pretty good but today we get a letter saying that our tariff is no longer available so they are putting us on a new one which is £20 per month.

Im not sure what the going rate is but seems expensive to me, any ideas who to change to???
    Quidco pref too

Just checking to see what we pay - think it was around £15 but im sure i can get cheaper cant i?

mine is still £5 a month from an old contract .Just hope that doesnt go up,

Mine is going up to £20 aswell.

I've had Orange since the free laptop deal a couple of years ago, pretty sure my contract is up now so looking at going with Virgin, reason being that our bt line doesn't get the greatest of signals kinda thing.

We're supposed to be on 8mb but we only get about 2.5/3mb, where as with Virgin we can have up to 50mb depending on what package we choose.

For the £20 per month they are offering up to 8 meg and unlimited downloads.

The "up to" figure is meaningless and depends on your distance from the exchange. Virgin may not be able to fulfill that offer

I got the letter from orange a while back saying they were upping it from £12 to £18. Phoned and moaned and they didn't!

Wanted to keep it for the Orange Wednesday which is a good perk (if you dont have an orange phone) don't forget

I don't think it's the cheapest but I've had it since Freeserve / Wanadoo and it's never let me down once, unlike my neighbours with Sky, Talk Talk and O2 ;-)

You need to phone them and register your "non-orange" phone number with them. Takes a few days to come through, but is well worth it. Use it twice a month and thats your money back

It won't be unlimited at that price.

Generally for the more dishonest ISPs an unlimited claim signifies their top package so £20 a month is reasonable - of course, if you only need a gigabyte or two you could move to a cheaper package.

The TalkTalk and O2/Be deals you'll see some people recommending are only availible in some places (only about 1 in 5 exchanges) so don't use any of them as your benchmark until you've checked you can get that particular package.

Talk talk is showing for me - £32.74 per month!

    Go for virgin.

We get 10Mbit with unlimited downloads for £2 a month.

    Apparently only BT available!

    Anyone got views on Plusnet?

I can get it for £5.99 for 3 months then £11.99 after that plus free router (although 6.99 delivery charge) I have an orange livebox but not sure if this can be used again

Had letter last week from Orange telling me I am going up from £24.99 to £30

Rang last week and asked for mac code to change over to 'Sky' , they said I would be emailed it within 2 days and still waiting 7 days later.

I signed an 18 month contract which runs till end Aug so dont know where I stand with this ?

    thanks loobie,
on the phone to orange at moment,
You must cancel within 30 days of receiving letter from 'orange' or you get locked in.

For anyone that wants to phone their customer care for a mac code use Freephone no. 0800.9801492
You will be on phone for sometime.

    regards.

My dad is probably about half way through an 18 month contract, does this mean his price will be safe? He pays £17.99 a month for line rental, calls package, 8mb unlimited broadband. Think it's a good deal apart from the total lack of CS!

    Thanks,
    Ben.

It depends really, ive been doing a lot!!! of searching but not many of the cheaper deals are available in my area. Most prices come up with around £17 - 24 per month for me so i could stay with orange but i dont really want to now!
Im thinking of either plusnet or virgin but would like some views on both before i commit.

bumping up for advice on the above please xx

I'd stick where you are. If you can find the same cheaper go elsewhere.

Haven't heard good things about plusnet either.

1,700 exchanges for TalkTalk, 1,200 exchanges for O2/Be. This is out of 5,500 total.

BT Wholesale you mean? It's hardly just since that's what the majority of ISPs use but it does mean you won't be able to get many of the cheaper deals.

I wouldn't go for either myself unless you go for Virgin's 50mbit service (which is supposed to get a reduction to £38 a month, or £28 with phone) as both are happy to lie to their customers when it comes to things like an 'unlimited' connection.

If you don't have access to the cheaper deals and don't need anything special I'd recommend going for one of the more highly rated ISPs like ]Zen or ]IDNet, probably on a 20-30GB package.

Good advice, and no long contract stitch ins with either of them, both have excellent track records and both have UK based proper technical support..
