Orange Sanfrancisco Rooting and custom ROM install guide

Hi am a noob at android myself but after wasting all yesterday trying to root and install ROM here is my noob guide hope it helps somebody
Drivers
XP-ZTE drivers supplied by flibblesan worked on XP.Sorry dont remember which one but in device manager try pointing to each one and one defiantly works as have just installed custom ROM on my XP machine
flibblesan.co.uk/and…zip
Windows 7 while switching on hold the volume up button so it remains in the boot loader screen(little green android on phone display should remain) and windows update automatically installs drivers for ADB which are needed for roothing and ROM install
USBHUB drivers still unavailable but you dont need them anyway so dont worry
Command Prompt
* Downloaded both the fastboot file and r2 Superboot / MCRi file,
* Placed the r2 Superboot / MCRi file(image) into the now unzipped fastboot folder.
* Moved this fastboot folder directly onto the C:/ drive on my PC.
* Turned off phone and pulled battery, replaced battery, then powered up phone. (Power+Volume up)
* It stops On the Green Android, plugged in USB cable, left it to do its thing and Windows 7 installed a fastboot driver.
* Opened a command prompt on the PC (type cmd into windows search box) and you should get something similar to C:\users\home>
* Type> cd c:\fastboot this should open the fastboot folder
then type in fastboot-windows flash boot boot.blade.superboot.mcri.r2.img * Next copy and paste this and hit enter> fastboot-windows reboot * Finally leave your phone to do its thing and in about 5 or so minutes it will have rebooted and you should have Root access.
Custom ROM install
Now after doing all this download the custom ROM to your desktop.Change the whole download name to
mcri-system.tar.gz(wasted all night trying to rename the extension of the download instead of the download name itself)
Put this name changed ROM on your SD card(drag and drop/copy after switching on mobile) this should NOT be in a folder but put straight to phone SD card
Restart the phone

DONE

Thanks for this Dexter - credit of course to those at MoDaCo but a step by step guide like this is just the ticket.

Anyone tried this on XP and confirm it works? Will give it a go myself after work...

Edit: Should read properly - noticed you mentioned at the start that you did it ok on XP yourself. Were there any differences in the step by step guide for XP?

Excellent I followed this and I was all done in minutes:D. Much clearer and easier to follow. Thanks for these instructions for us noobs. You do need to change it so that it says

cd c:\fastboot
fastboot-windows flash boot boot.blade.superboot.mcri.r2.img

As in not all on the same line.

anyone bought and had this phone unlocked yet? I was thinking about getting the x10 xperia pro mini but this seems like a good phone? Would want it on o2 though

haha never saw that sorry.

Downloaded the win 7 drivers as above.

But how do i exit the Green Android Screen now as i don't want to root it until i've read more into it.

Tried everything apart from Removing the battery which i don't want to do incase it damages the software/phone oO

Ignore the above............ Just went for it and its now rooted

Gonna wait before putting on the custom rom until my £10 topup arrives as i think i've read that if i custom it before hand i'll lose it? Is this true?

Also now its rooted (superuser icon in apps screen) is it just a matter of placing the custom rom with the zip file renamed to 'mcri-system.tar.gz' then just turn off my phone and back on again?

Thanks

Let me know how you get on im up to the same stage but when i put the 'mcri-system.tar.gz' file on the root of my sd card and reboot nothing happens, this is when it should take a few mins to delete all the orange stuff and come on but mine just comes on the same.

**** is this supposed to be noob proof? Cos I'm on XP and I'm struggling to understand where to start with rooting it.

Its going to be a week or so before i go to the next stage as i want to get the topup prior to custom Rom'ing it.

As soon as i do it i'll post it on here. Good luck i'll be interested to see how you get on as well

Good luck (_;)

By the way have you unlocked yours yet as well. Still not done mine as again want to use the topup first.

I unlocked straight away no probs, it doesnt affect the top up situation to do the upgrade as its only a software upgrade that can be reversed, ill let you know if i get it sorted

Took your word for it and i've gone for it and it worked first time hope i dont lose my topup

Used this download:

loadbalancing.modaco.com/dow…img

Then renamed the entire thing so it read 'mcri-system.tar.gz' make sure you replace the .gz extension as well other wise it will read .gz.gz

Connected my phone via usb copied the renamed zip file to the root of my sdcard.

Powered down my phone then turned it back on and waited.

It stays on the Orange logo alot longer than usual then it boots up.

Now all the Orange apps have gone and there replaced with things like

Adobe Reader
Car Home
Latitude
News and Weather
Places
Sim Toolkit
Talk

And some others

Now to explore this thing and find out what i can do with it

By the way once the rom has been installed the file will have been renamed to

'mcri-system.tar.gz.flashed'

Just need to find out now to see if its ok to delete it to save on space for all the apps i'm going to install

hey there peeps...seems like a few commentors above encountered a simple problem to me!

when copy-pasting file to SD root, there no need for the ".gz" bit in the renaming process (mcri-system.tar.gz) as .gz is a file extension. looked kinda funny when i went to files directory on mobile an saw a file called "mcri-system.tar.gz.gz", jus put SD card in computer delete last bit from file name, so should be "mcri-system.tar", pop card in mobile n viola!

seem rather obvious but im a bit of a techno rookie n always make mistakes with file extensions when renaming!

Anyone tried getting the apps to run from the sd instead of the internal memory?

Why's this expired??

is it possible to use your orange £10 credit to pay for apps?

Nope

I have got as far as 'mcri-system.tar.gz.flashed' on my SD card but my phone no longer gets beyond the orange logo screen on boot up.

I definitely require help

I give up! pointed at the link you gave but just goes to modado home page, already have the file have transferred to sd card renamed but without the .gz and just the same happens, when you say ''make sure you replace the .gz extension as well other wise it will read .gz.gzConnected'' do you just mean when renaming dont type .gz, glad you got yours sorted iv downloaded an app called 'home switcher' allows you to fully customise, and downloaded an app to hide all orange apps so maybe dont need rom thing to work.

can i buy anything with my topup credit..apart from gambling?

mods please unexpire as still might help somebody

@ MRP24

Have you made sure you have got windows set so you can see the file extensions?

If so when you right click and rename initially it will leave the .gz at the end of the file unhighlighted, you need to then left click and highlight everything including the .gz at the end. Then rename the entire thing to mcri-system.tar.gz

Also make sure when you download the file from Modoco then you Internet Explorer as read on a few posts if you Chrome or other browsers it corrupts the file.

Good luck and let me know how you get on

The rom is also available here:

phew
just bought mine after an effort that seems to negate the discount!
was initially told £30 discount on behalf of my partner how is on orange. however it seems her phone was a gift from her mum and still registered in her name. After much holding on the phone mum managed to change details so all Go?
No seems that you need to have had the phone for 3 months to get £30 discount so managed to get £20 after much haggling with sales rep and manager.

Sales rep said he might post on this thread to try and details actual orange sales conditions.

Hope configuring and using the phone is easier that buying it!

Im a noob too, and I havent got a clue where to start!

Agree

Everytime i connect normally the phone connects and pops up as a normal drive.

But when i put it into fastboot mode the vista system keeps saying i need to lacte the driver even though i have downloaded and installed the drivers through the website.

Also when i type into c command it keeps saying:
c:\ fastboot is not recognised as an external or internal command etc etc.

Any suggestions because i really want to root it??

Thanks to the OP, done in 5 minutes.
