    Organ Donor

After recieving my shiny new passport today, i noticed an organ donor leaflet included with it. I just wondered how many on here carried a donor card with them, and their views on the matter.

Yep I carry one and my oh and I have discussed it. Once your dead your dead and no amount of organs are going to help you but could help lots of others. The doctors are welcome to anything they can salvage!

I do, my view is that if I can save a life or a number of lives when I no longer have one then that is brilliant.
My organs could save/help a number of people and change a number of lives for the better, that makes me want to donate when I die. The fact I can make a difference to people's lives even when dead is an amazing thing.

    Hi,

I don't carry a card but have signed up with the organ donation scheme and my other half knows so if/when the time comes he can let the doctors know.

I used to hate the idea of organ donation, I could never get round the idea of people donating their eyes, etc. but now I'm grown up and realise that when I'm gone they are no use or ornament to me but can help someone else.

    | don't have an organ but you can have a flute if you want it!

    (sorry bad joke :p)

Yeah, I carry one. They can have anything except my eyes!

Personally think it should be compulsory with an "opt out" clause for those against it.

I have one, its on my boots card and driving lisence and I think it's an amazing way to offer life to someone when yours is up. Although, even though you can opt to donate, it all comes down to your next of kin so they can turn around and make the final decision.. I find that discraceful, it should be entirely your decision!

I'm of th same disposition; when you're dead....you're dead, wouldn't it mean that an open casket funeral would be impossible though?

I've carried a donor card (just waiting for someone to make the 'Donner' joke...) since I was 18 and started giving blood. After I die I'm worm-food and there's no sense in letting organs rot/burn that could save or greatly improve someone else's life! I have discussed it with everyone close to me so there is no confusion, but anything is up for grabs when I die.

they would stitch everything back so no one would know. They would stitch your eyelids closed I would imagine (but they close the body's eyes anyway don't they?) I'm not an expert though

I feel I should add though, that although I give my organs unconditionally, I would prefer, for example, my lungs not to go to a smoker or liver to an alcoholic. Part of me thinks that they had the power to stop smoking/drinking and I'm not saying they brought it upon themselves, but more the fact that they did not help themselves.

Thank you, Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!!! I thought it was only me who was funny about donating their eyes.
Everyone I know thinks it a bit odd to have this exclusion, but I don't want anyone to have my eyes.

Also (don't know if this is true or not) if you do exclude something, I've heard that they can't then give your whole body to medical school.
I knew some people at medical school and the stories they told about what happened to the cadavers meant I would never want to end up there.

yeh i guess they could sew me back together like they do in six feet under...i know the caket thing sounds pretty vain, but if i died next week, i'd hate my parents not being able to have a traditional funeral becasue i signed up for a donor card at such a young age.

Think they are looking at an "opt out" system. Makes more sense to me
    Yes I carry one.

They wont give your body to a medical school, you have to ask to leave your body to science to do that. My grandma did that when I was little, I remember her dying but nothing else. Mum said it was horrible because 5 years later they were given back her body when finished with so they had to go through the funeral all over again. I'm going back to the 1980's here so it may be completely different now.

I went to see that Bodyworks exhibition in Manchester and it was really interesting. They had a copy of a declaration of someone who donated their body to them for use in teaching, etc.

if you die with your eyes open they only have a limited amount of time (not sure how long) they can close them before they are unable to, sometimes if you die with your eyes shut your muscles relax after death and your eyes can open, they often stitch or glue the eyes shut again but there are times when they are too open to do it. My Mum said it was the most haunting thing when her Dad died that his eyes were wide open cos they didn't shut them quick enough.

What a weird thing to be talking about !

I have a registered with the donor site and I think it should be an opt OUT thing, so everyone is automatically on there unless they state they don't want to be.
