    Parking

Keep having this arguement with OH about leaving car in gear when it is parked. I was taught to leave it in gear and always check it is in neutral before starting it up. He disagrees and says you should always leave it in neutral - he keeps getting in and not checking it is in neutral and tells me it is dangerous to leave it in gear. Who is right?

Shouldn't leave the car in gear but you should always check that it is in neutral before starting so both wrong :-p

i thought you left the car in gear when on a hill

shouldnt you leave it in gear if parking on a steep gradient in the event the handbrake fails?

Seems new drivers are now taught to leave the car in neutral except if car parked on an incline (my daughter was). Parking in gear seems to be an older drivers thing! I have recently queried this with an instructor but maybe this was just her opinion and varies between different instructors.

I was never taught to leave it in gear unless it was on a steep hill.

Does no harm to leave in gear, and it's advisable to start the car with your foot on the clutch or so my mechanic mate tells me

I was told to always leave the car in neutral (to minimise pressure on the engine) by the driving instructor almost 2 years ago, although my dad has always insisted it should be left in gear (either 1st or reverse depending on the direction the car is headed) so that the engine will hold the car should the parking break fail.

I decided that using the gearbox as a backup incase the parking break fails is a better option to go with, rather than having a car that could roll, yet with a better condition engine :P

I was taught to always leave it in gear , that was nearly 20 years ago though

    quick google

If you park on a hill you shouldpark close to the kerb and apply the handbrake firmly select a forward gear and turn your steering wheel away from the kerb when facing uphill select reverse gear and turn your steering wheel towards the kerb when facing downhill use ‘park’ if your car has an automatic gearbox

seems you should leave it in gear...guess both my instructors were wrong

You should leave it in gear,Handbrakes fail sometimes,If parked on a hill turn the steering slightly then if it rolls it doesnt go all the way down the hill, everyone should always check that a car is in neutral before starting the engine,

    +1.
don't think you should leave it in gear as there's a good chance of your car hitting something when you (forget), or someone else gets in and starts it up!!
Only leave it in gear on a hill.
Passed my test 18 years ago by the way.

Dont really understand the point of leaving it in gear when on a normal surface (i.e. not a hill)??

If you've ever owned a Citroen Xantia you'll know it is essential to leave the car in gear when parked, they had a notorious fault that when the brake disc cooled the handbrake would release!

Also, you should always start a manual with the clutch pressed - it's far less stress on the starter motor.

Second nature for me to check whether the cars in gear and have always left it in gear when parked. I can't remember whether that's because I was taught as it is so long ago!

In gear on a hill and always depress the clutch before starting, been the same rules for many a year!!

only ever leave mine in gear if on a hill, but also i my car wont start unless i have my foot on the clutch anyway so no way it could "jump" etc. i drive a toyota with push button start and you have to put you foot down on the clutch before pushing the button otherwise doesnt start.

Yep agree with most I'm afaid hun, only leave in gear if parked on a hill. If ur drive is on a hill then u'[ve won the argument:-D
